The Annex Cowl by Cathy Fascinato

What Is Being Made

The Annex is a seamless knitted cowl designed by Cathy Fascinato for Koigu Wool Designs. This versatile neckwear piece features finished measurements of 60cm (24 inches) in circumference and 15cm (6 inches) in width, making it suitable for layering or wearing as a comfortable neck accessory. The cowl is worked in the round from the bottom up, creating a continuous tube without seams.

Techniques Used

This design employs several key knitting techniques to create visual interest and structure. The cowl is worked seamlessly in the round using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming. Lace patterning is incorporated throughout the design using yarn overs and decreases to create an openwork fabric. The construction method is bottom-up, meaning you cast on at the lower edge and work upward to the bind-off edge. A picot bind-off finish is used to complete the top edge with a decorative, scalloped detail.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with lace techniques. The main stitches include:

  • Knit (K) and Purl (P) stitches for stockinette and textured sections
  • Yarn Over (YO) stitches to create the openwork lace pattern and add decorative holes
  • Double Vertical Decrease (DVD), a centered decrease worked by slipping two stitches as if to knit, knitting the third stitch, then passing both slipped stitches over the knit stitch
  • Cable cast-on for the picot bind-off edging

The pattern repeats over a 6-stitch repeat unit, which is worked across all 138 cast-on stitches. The lace motif alternates with stockinette rounds, and the pattern sequence is repeated five times with color changes between each repeat cycle.

Materials

This cowl is knitted using Koigu KPPPM Pencil Pack yarn in the Fiesta and Purple colorways. The yarn is 100% Merino wool, with each pack containing 10 demi skeins of 25g (87 yards/80 meters) each, providing ample yardage for the project. Knitting is worked on a 3.25mm (US3) circular needle with a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round and a tapestry needle for finishing. The recommended gauge is 28 stitches over 10cm (4 inches) in stockinette stitch, ensuring proper fit and drape of the finished cowl.
