Techniques Used

The Watermark Shawl employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance and structure. Decreasing and increasing are used strategically to shape the shawl's triangular silhouette—decreases occur at the beginning of alternating rows while increases happen at the end of alternating rows, creating a diagonal construction. Slipped stitches are incorporated at the beginning of every row to create a neat, finished edge, while purling at the end of each row maintains a consistent selvage edge. The shawl utilizes color changes organized in a fade or dark-to-light sequence, with colors introduced and removed at specific points to build the pattern without excessive yarn ends. Knitting is performed on a 3mm (US size 3) circular needle measuring 40 centimeters (16 inches) in length, or a needle size adjusted to obtain the correct gauge. A tapestry needle is required for weaving in yarn ends after completion.
