Koigu Watermark Shawl

What is Being Made

The Watermark Shawl is a triangular knitted wrap designed by Taiu Landra for Koigu Wool Designs. This intermediate-level shawl measures 19 inches (48 centimeters) wide at its widest point and 76 inches (193 centimeters) in length, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or draping. The shawl features a structured construction with strategic color changes that create visual interest and depth throughout the finished piece.

Techniques Used

The Watermark Shawl employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance and structure. Decreasing and increasing are used strategically to shape the shawl's triangular silhouette—decreases occur at the beginning of alternating rows while increases happen at the end of alternating rows, creating a diagonal construction. Slipped stitches are incorporated at the beginning of every row to create a neat, finished edge, while purling at the end of each row maintains a consistent selvage edge. The shawl utilizes color changes organized in a fade or dark-to-light sequence, with colors introduced and removed at specific points to build the pattern without excessive yarn ends. Yarn forward and yarn back techniques are employed within the stitch patterns to create texture and openwork elements.

Stitches Used

  • Seed Stitch: A foundational textured stitch created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard pattern, used in multiple sections throughout the shawl for visual interest and stability
  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch used for gauge measurement, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, forming a smooth, classic fabric
  • Ridge Stitch: A textured stitch that creates horizontal ridges, used as a transition element between color sections
  • Open Check Stitch: An openwork pattern repeated in two-row sets throughout the shawl, created using slipped stitches, yarn forwards, and knit-two-together decreases to form a lacy, geometric texture
  • Knit Front and Back (kfb): An increase technique that creates an extra stitch by knitting into both the front and back of the same stitch
  • Knit Two Together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease that combines two stitches into one
  • Yarn Over (yo): A technique that creates decorative holes and lacy elements within the stitch pattern

Materials and Construction Details

The Watermark Shawl is knitted using Koigu Pencil Box 10 Demi KPPPM yarn, a premium hand-dyed wool from Koigu Wool Designs based in Chatsworth, Canada. The project requires 10 skeins totaling 250 grams and 870 yards (795 meters) of yarn. The color palette consists of ten carefully selected shades: (A) P490 navy firework, (B) P451 mid blue, (C) P480 light sea foam, (D) P045 blue with orange/gold, (E) P418 speckle blue, (F) P925 brilliant blue, (G) P464 speckle blue with color, (H) P484 dark blue, (I) P034 gold and blue, and (J) P475 bright firework. These colors are organized in a fade or dark-to-light sequence to create visual depth and movement.

Knitting is performed on a 3mm (US size 3) circular needle measuring 40 centimeters (16 inches) in length, or a needle size adjusted to obtain the correct gauge. The recommended gauge is 24 stitches by 32 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when working in stockinette stitch with the specified needle size. A tapestry needle is required for weaving in yarn ends after completion.

Pattern Structure

The shawl is organized into distinct sections, each introducing new color work and stitch patterns. Section I begins with color (A) P490 navy firework and features seed stitch, open check stitch patterns, and ridge stitch transitions. The pattern demonstrates how to systematically add new colors while maintaining the shawl's triangular shape through coordinated increases and decreases. Section II continues the construction with color (B) P451 mid blue, repeating the established stitch sequences to build consistency and visual rhythm throughout the finished piece.

In the nearly 60 years I’ve been knitting; I’ve never run across a pattern with worse instructions. Possibly a translation issue from the original if it wasn’t written in English? I've reached out to the WEBS crafting team and they are currently reviewing the pattern and hope to clarify. Seed Stitch pattern is typically Row 1: k1, p1 Row 2: p1, k1 But this pattern has the following for Seed Stitch: Row 1: k1, p1 Row 2: p1, k2 Is this a typo? Or just a variation for this pattern? Also, before...
