Lana Grossa Slipover in Cara

What is Being Made

The Slipover Cara is a sleeveless waistcoat-style garment designed for knitters seeking a versatile layering piece. This design features a fitted silhouette with a distinctive V-neck and comes in four size options: 36/38, 40/42, 44/46, and 48/50. The garment showcases a two-color colorwork approach, combining Marine and Off White yarns to create visual interest and depth.

Techniques Used

This slipover employs several key knitting techniques that create both structural integrity and aesthetic appeal:

  • Bottom-up construction: The piece is worked from the cast-on edge upward, allowing for straightforward length adjustments and intuitive sizing
  • Worked flat: The main body sections are knitted flat on straight needles, then seamed together for a polished finish
  • Worked in the round: The neckband is worked circularly using a short circular needle, creating a seamless neck edge
  • Seamed assembly: Shoulder and side seams are sewn together, with a strategic 12 cm opening left at the bottom of the side seams to create a split hem detail
  • Full-fashion shaping: Double decreases are worked at the V-neck edges in a full-fashion manner, creating a refined, professional appearance along the neckline

Stitches Used

The Slipover Cara incorporates a variety of stitch patterns to achieve its distinctive texture and structure:

  • Ribbed pattern: A fundamental * K1, p1 * repeat forms the foundation of the design, providing elasticity and a classic aesthetic
  • Slip stitch rib pattern: A modified rib that uses slipped stitches worked purlwise with yarn in front (wyif) to create a refined edge treatment. This pattern is worked over three rows, alternating between knit-purl combinations and slipped stitch sequences
  • Half-brioche rib: An advanced stitch technique that combines yarn overs with slipped stitches. The pattern involves making a yarn over, slipping the next stitch purlwise, then knitting the slipped stitch together with its yarn over on the return row. This creates a luxurious, dimensional texture with excellent recovery and drape
  • Stockinette stitch: The primary fabric base, providing a smooth, classic canvas for the colorwork and stitch pattern details

Materials and Specifications

The Slipover Cara is designed to be worked with Lana Grossa Cara yarn, a premium blend composed of 57% baby alpaca, 33% cotton, and 10% Merino wool. This fiber composition creates a yarn that is soft, breathable, and durable—ideal for a garment meant for layering and year-round wear.

Yardage requirements: The pattern calls for 400 grams (sizes 36/38 and 40/42), 450 grams (size 44/46), or 500 grams (size 48/50) of Marine (color 21) for the primary color, plus 150 grams (sizes 36/38 and 40/42), 200 grams (size 44/46), or 250 grams (size 48/50) of Off White (color 1) for contrast and the neckband.

Needles: Size 3 and 3.5 mm straight needles are used for the main fabric, with a short size 3 mm circular needle for the neckband. The needle size difference creates subtle gauge variation that enhances the fit and drape of the finished garment.

Design Details and Finishing

The Slipover Cara features a carefully engineered V-neck that is shaped using full-fashion decreases worked on right-side rows. The neckline shaping begins with a single double decrease at the center, followed by strategic decreases every right-side row once, then every sixth row fourteen times, ensuring a gradual, flattering taper toward the shoulders.

Shoulder shaping is accomplished through a series of bind-offs worked at each shoulder edge, with the specific number and size of bind-offs varying by size to accommodate different proportions. The neckband is picked up around the entire neck edge—including the held center stitch—and worked in the round using the Off White yarn, creating a clean, finished edge that frames the V-neck opening.
