Lana Grossa Hat in Alta Moda Cashmere 16

What is Being Made

This is a classic knitted hat designed to fit head circumferences of 52-54 cm, 55-57 cm, or 58-60 cm. The hat features a folded brim that is turned twice to the outside for a refined, double-layer finish. The design is from the About Berlin Special 01 collection and showcases the luxurious qualities of premium cashmere-blended yarn.

Techniques Used

The hat is constructed using several key knitting techniques:

  • Worked in the round: The entire hat is knitted circularly using double-pointed needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a seamless, tubular construction.
  • Bottom-up construction: The hat is begun at the cast-on edge and worked upward toward the crown, allowing for easy length adjustments before shaping begins.
  • Crown shaping: Strategic decreases are worked in multiple rounds to taper the top of the hat, creating a fitted crown that closes with a gathered finish.
  • Brim folding: The finished brim is folded twice to the outside, creating a professional, polished edge detail.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern is a ribbed knit worked over a multiple of 3 stitches. The rib pattern alternates between two rounds: one round of purl 2, knit 1 (P2, K1) and one round of knit 1, purl 1, knit 1 (K1, P1, K1). This creates vertical columns of texture that provide stretch and recovery, making the hat comfortable and form-fitting. Crown shaping employs knit 2 together (K2tog) decreases, which are worked in successive rounds to gradually reduce stitch count from 66 (72, 78) stitches down to 11 (12, 13) stitches.

Materials and Tools

This hat requires 100 grams of Lana Grossa Alta Moda Cashmere 16 yarn in the colorway Mint Turquoise (color 34). The yarn composition is 78% pure wool, 12% cashmere, and 10% polyamide, with a yardage of 110 meters per 50-gram skein. This fiber blend provides warmth, softness, and durability. The recommended needle size is 7 mm double-pointed needles (dpns), arranged as a set of four needles for circular knitting. The working gauge is 20.5 stitches and 23 rounds over 10 centimeters when worked in the rib pattern on size 7 mm needles. A stitch marker is required to denote the beginning of each round.
