Lana Grossa Wrap in Shades of Merino Cotton

What is Being Made

This is a triangular wrap (Dreiecktuch) designed as Design 04 from Filati Tücher & Co. The finished wrap measures approximately 195 centimeters wide by 195 centimeters long by 45 centimeters high, creating a large, versatile triangular shawl suitable for layering or draping across the shoulders.

Techniques Used

The wrap is constructed using several key knitting techniques that create both structure and visual interest:

  • Bottom-up construction: The triangular shawl is worked from a small cast-on at the center point, increasing outward to create the full triangular shape
  • Seamless knitting: The entire wrap is worked as one continuous piece without seaming
  • Worked flat: The shawl is knitted flat using circular needles, rather than in the round
  • Yarn-over increases: Strategic yarn overs create both shaping and decorative lace-like details throughout the design
  • Cord edge finishing: A decorative cord edge (Kordelkante) is worked along the first half of the stitches to create a finished, professional appearance

Stitches Used

The wrap primarily features garter stitch (Kraus rechts), which is created by knitting every row on both the right and wrong sides. This fundamental stitch creates a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges. The pattern incorporates yarn overs (Umschlag) worked strategically to increase stitch counts and create decorative elements. The construction begins with a small cast-on of 3 stitches and increases by 4 stitches every right-side row until reaching 253 stitches, demonstrating the mathematical precision of triangular shawl design.

Materials

The wrap is knitted using Lana Grossa Shades of Merino Cotton, a blend yarn composed of 50% Merino extrafine wool and 50% cotton with approximately 760 meters of yardage per 200 grams. The project requires 200 grams each of two colorways: one combining Altrosa, Graubeige, Umbra, and Dunkelbraun (color 410), and another blending Sand, Orange, Khaki, and Dunkelgrau (color 609). The needles required include one circular needle size 4.5 and one short double-pointed needle size 3.5. A gauge of 18 stitches and 36 rows in garter stitch using size 5 needles measures 10 by 10 centimeters, providing a reference for tension control during knitting.
