Lana Grossa Pullover in Elastico

What is Being Made

The Lana Grossa Pullover in Elastico is a classic knitted sweater featuring a V-neck design and decorative cable detail at the center front. This pullover is worked in a bottom-up construction method, making it an accessible project for knitters who prefer building garments from the hem upward. The design is available in four size options ranging from 36/38 to 48/50, accommodating a variety of body measurements.

Techniques Used

This pullover employs several key knitting techniques to create its finished structure:

  • Bottom-up construction: The sweater is knitted starting from the cast-on edge at the lower body and worked upward toward the shoulders and neckline, allowing for easy length adjustments during the knitting process.
  • Worked flat: The body pieces are knitted flat on straight needles rather than in the round, which means each piece requires seaming to join the front and back panels together.
  • Seamed construction: After individual pieces are completed, they are sewn together using mattress stitch or similar seaming techniques to create the finished garment.
  • Cable knitting: A decorative cable detail is incorporated at the center front, adding visual interest and texture to the design.
  • Full-fashion shaping: Armhole and neckline shaping is achieved through full-fashion decreases, which are worked one or two stitches in from the edge for a more refined, professional appearance.
  • V-neck construction: The front neckline features a centered V-neck that is shaped symmetrically on both sides of the divide.

Stitches Used

The Lana Grossa Pullover in Elastico incorporates a limited palette of fundamental knitting stitches, making it suitable for intermediate knitters:

  • Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch throughout most of the garment, created by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows. This creates the smooth, classic fabric that forms the base of the sweater.
  • Seed stitch: A textured stitch worked over a multiple of 2 plus 1, with 2 selvage stitches on each side. Seed stitch alternates knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard pattern, creating a bumpy, reversible fabric. This stitch is used for edging details throughout the design.
  • Garter stitch: Created by knitting every row, garter stitch appears as horizontal ridges and is used for selvage edges and structural elements that require stability.
  • Cable detail: A specialized stitch pattern worked from a chart over 25 center stitches on the front piece. The cable pattern is worked according to a provided chart, with specific instructions for right-side and wrong-side rows, and involves slipping stitches onto a cable needle to create twisted, rope-like textures.

Materials

The Lana Grossa Pullover in Elastico requires specific materials to achieve the intended drape and fit:

  • Yarn: Lana Grossa Elastico (96% cotton, 4% polyester blend; 160 meters per 50 grams) in the colorway Gentian Blue (color 157). Yardage requirements vary by size: 450 grams for size 36/38, 500 grams for size 40/42, 550 grams for size 44/46, and 600 grams for size 48/50. This fiber blend provides breathability and elasticity, making it ideal for a fitted pullover.
  • Needles: Size 4 mm straight needles for the main body work, and a size 3.5 mm circular needle measuring 40 cm in length for ribbing or other sections requiring smaller gauge.
  • Notions: A cable needle is required for working the cable detail at the center front.

Pattern Structure and Finishing

The pattern provides detailed row-by-row instructions for the back and front pieces, with measurements and stitch counts given for each size. The back piece is worked straight until the armhole shaping begins at 44 cm from the cast-on edge. Armhole shaping involves binding off stitches at the beginning of rows followed by full-fashion decreases worked at each end of subsequent right-side rows. The front follows the same shaping as the back but includes the cable detail chart worked over the center 25 stitches for the
