Lana Grossa Top in Puno Due

What is Being Made

The Lana Grossa Top in Puno Due is an intermediate-level knitted top available in three sizes (36, 38/40, and 42). This garment features a fitted silhouette achieved through strategic shaping at the sides and armholes, making it a versatile piece suitable for various occasions and seasons.

Yarn and Materials

This top is crafted using Lana Grossa Puno Due, a premium yarn blend composed of 63% cotton and 37% baby alpaca. The yarn offers a yardage of 210 meters per 50-gram ball. The pattern requires 200 grams (200, 250 grams for larger sizes) of yarn in the Light Beige/Cream colorway (col 15). The cotton-alpaca blend provides breathability and softness, making this top suitable for warm weather wear while maintaining structure and drape.

Needles and Gauge

The top is worked on size 4 mm knitting needles. The recommended gauge is 21 stitches and 36 rows measuring 10 x 10 centimeters when worked in the rib pattern on size 4 mm needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements and fit.

Stitches and Techniques Used

This intermediate project employs several key knitting techniques and stitches:

  • Rib Pattern: The primary stitch pattern is a rib worked according to a provided chart with a multiple of 4 plus 3 stitches, plus 2 selvage stitches. The pattern requires working rows 1 through 4 once, then repeating rows 3 and 4 throughout the piece.
  • Selvage Stitches: Selvage stitches are maintained on every row by knitting the first and last stitch. These edge stitches create clean, finished edges and are not included in the chart.
  • Twisted Garter Selvage: For the armhole shaping section, the selvage technique transitions to a twisted garter selvage. On right-side rows, the first stitch is knitted through the back loop (ktbl) and the last stitch is slipped purlwise with yarn in back (wyib). On wrong-side rows, the first stitch is purled through the back loop (ptbl) and the last stitch is slipped purlwise with yarn in front (wyif).
  • Full-Fashion Shaping: The top incorporates full-fashion double decreases and double increases for professional-looking shaping. Double decreases are worked at each end of rows to shape the sides and armholes, while double increases are used to add stitches where needed.
  • Yarn Overs: The pattern includes yarn overs (yo), which are treated as single stitches within the stitch count.
  • Knit Through Back Loop (ktbl): This technique is used selectively within the pattern for texture and structure.

Construction and Shaping

The back piece is constructed by casting on 89 (97, 105) stitches loosely using size 4 mm needles. The pattern follows a chart beginning with a wrong-side row, with row numbers indicated at the chart edges to guide the knitter through right-side and wrong-side rows.

The garment features strategic shaping to create a fitted silhouette. After working 7 centimeters from the cast-on edge, the sides are shaped using full-fashion double decreases, reducing 2 stitches at each end of the next 2 right-side rows to create 81 (89, 97) stitches. The piece continues in pattern until it measures 24 centimeters from the cast-on, at which point full-fashion double increases add 2 stitches at each end of the next 2 right-side rows, returning to 89 (97, 105) stitches.

The top continues in pattern until reaching 39 centimeters from the cast-on edge. Armhole shaping then begins with full-fashion double decreases at each end of the first right-side row, followed by decreases every alternate right-side row for 3 (5, 7) additional times, resulting in 73 stitches. The piece is completed when it measures 60 (61, 62) centimeters from the cast-on, with measurements varying slightly by size.
