Lana Grossa Pullover in Silkhair or Silkhair Hand-Dyed
What Is Being Made
This is a classic pullover sweater designed by Lana Grossa, available in two distinct yarn versions. The pullover features a fitted silhouette with set-in sleeves and is offered in three sizes: 36, 38/40, and 42. The design showcases elegant stitch patterning worked in luxurious mohair-silk blends, making it suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions.
Construction Techniques
The pullover is constructed using bottom-up knitting methodology, meaning the garment is worked from the lower edge upward. The pieces are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, and the finished components are seamed together to create the final garment. This traditional approach allows for precise shaping and professional finishing details.
The construction begins with the back piece, which establishes the foundation for the sweater. The front piece is worked separately using the same techniques, with custom shaping for the neckline. Ribbed edging at the cuffs and hem provides structure and elasticity to the garment.
Stitches Used
The pattern incorporates a rib stitch pattern for the lower edge and cuffs, worked as P2, K2 (purl 2, knit 2). This creates a classic, form-fitting edge that prevents rolling and provides recovery.
The body of the pullover features a main pattern chart with a multiple of 2 plus 1, plus 2 selvage stitches. This stitch pattern is worked according to a provided chart, creating textural or colorwork interest across the front and back pieces. Selvage stitches frame the pattern edges, ensuring neat seaming when pieces are joined together.
Shaping techniques include strategic bind-offs for neck opening and shoulder construction, allowing the sweater to fit properly at the neckline and armholes.
Materials and Yarn
Version 1 uses Lana Grossa Silkhair Hand-Dyed yarn, composed of 70% superkid mohair and 30% silk, with a yardage of 400 meters per 50 grams. This version requires 100 grams (for sizes 36 and 38/40) or 200 grams (for size 42) in the multi-color hand-dyed colorway (col 606), featuring shades of Lime, White, Green, Olive, Jade, Turquoise, Vanilla, Yellow, Petrol, Pink, Terracotta, and Beige. An additional 50 grams (or 100 grams for size 42) of a coordinating hand-dyed colorway (col 604) in Pink, Blush, Pale Green, Grey Brown, Lagoon, and Turquoise provides contrast or secondary color work.
Version 2 uses Lana Grossa Silkhair in a solid Turquoise colorway (col 143), also composed of 70% superkid mohair and 30% silk. This version offers 210 meters per 25 grams and requires 125 grams (for size 36), 150 grams (for sizes 38/40 and 42).
Needles and Tools
The pattern calls for size 4.5 mm and 5 mm straight needles for working the flat pieces. A size 5 mm circular needle, 40 cm long, is also required, likely for managing stitches or working certain sections. The ribbed cuffs and hem are worked on the smaller 4.5 mm needles to create tighter tension, while the main body is worked on the larger 5 mm needles for a more open gauge.
Gauge and Sizing
The pullover is designed in three sizes with graduated measurements. The back piece measures approximately 44 to 46 cm in length depending on size. The front neckline is shaped with graduated bind-offs to create a comfortable, flattering opening. Shoulder width and armhole depth are calibrated to ensure proper fit across the three size options.
Yarn Characteristics
Both yarn versions feature a luxurious blend of superkid mohair and silk, creating a soft, lightweight fabric with excellent drape. The mohair content provides warmth and a subtle halo effect, while the silk adds sheen, durability, and a smooth texture. The hand-dyed version in Version 1 offers rich, variegated color combinations, while Version 2 provides a solid, sophisticated Turquoise option. These premium fi
