What is Being Made

This is a diagonal stole measuring 80 x 160 cm, designed as a versatile wrap suitable for layering or draping. The stole is worked from a small cast-on that expands through strategic increases, creating a triangular or rectangular shape depending on how it is worn. The finished piece combines two complementary yarn weights for visual interest and texture variation.

Techniques Used

The stole is worked flat on straight needles, meaning it is constructed in rows rather than in the round. The construction is seamless, as the entire piece is created as one continuous fabric without requiring seaming. The design employs lace techniques through eyelet patterns that create openwork sections, adding an airy quality to the wrap. The stole is worked diagonally, with the arrow on the schematic indicating the direction of work. This diagonal construction allows the piece to grow from a small number of cast-on stitches to the full width through systematic increases.

The stole features full-fashion decreases, a shaping technique that creates a neat, finished edge. At the beginning of right-side rows, after a two-stitch selvage and one stitch in stockinette, a knit-two-together decrease is worked. At the end of right-side rows, decreases are worked through the last five stitches using a knit-two-together through the back loop, followed by one stitch in stockinette and the two-stitch selvage. This creates a professional, tailored appearance along the edges.

Stitches Used

The stole incorporates several fundamental knitting stitches to create texture and visual appeal:

• Stockinette stitch: Knit on right-side rows and purl on wrong-side rows, creating a smooth, classic fabric base
• Garter stitch: Knit on every row, producing a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges
• Eyelet pattern: A lace stitch worked over a multiple of 2 plus 1 stitch, combining knit-two-together decreases with yarn overs to create decorative openwork holes
• Moss stitch: Also called seed stitch variation, alternating knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard pattern to create texture
• Seed stitch: A textured stitch created by alternating knit and purl stitches within rows

The pattern also employs make-one increases (M1R for make-one right) to systematically expand the fabric during the increase segment, allowing the stole to grow from 5 cast-on stitches to 165 stitches over 160 rows. Yarn overs (yo) are used in the eyelet pattern to create decorative holes while maintaining stitch count.

Materials

The stole is knitted using two distinct Lana Grossa yarns held together throughout the project:

• Lana Grossa Allora: 250 grams total, composed of 76% cotton, 14% superfine Merino wool, and 10% baby alpaca, with a yardage of 300 meters per 50 grams. The color used is Grey Violet (col 16)
• Lana Grossa Elastico: 500 grams total, composed of 96% cotton and 4% polyester (Elité), with a yardage of 160 meters per 50 grams. The color used is Powder (col 125)

The two strands are held together throughout the entire project, creating a blended yarn with approximately 2 strands held as one. This technique combines the breathable, natural fiber content of the Allora yarn with the elastic recovery and durability of the Elastico yarn.

Size 5 mm needles are used for this project. The recommended gauge is 17 stitches and 27 rows equaling 10 x 10 centimeters when worked in the texture pattern on size 5 mm needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the finished dimensions of 80 x 160 centimeters.
