Product Description
Lana Grossa Hat in Lala Berlin Lovely
What is Being Made
This is a classic knitted hat designed by Lala Berlin, featured as Design 14 from Filati About Berlin 06. The hat is available in three sizes to fit head circumferences of 50–52 cm, 53–55 cm, and 56–58 cm, making it suitable for a range of adult wearers. The finished hat features a seamless construction with a fitted crown and is worked entirely in the round for a polished, professional appearance.
Techniques Used
This hat is constructed using bottom-up, seamless, worked-in-the-round techniques. The garment begins at the brim with a cast-on and is worked upward in continuous rounds using double-pointed needles. This method eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, uninterrupted fabric. The crown is shaped through strategic decreases worked at marked positions, allowing the knitter to gradually taper the top of the hat until all stitches are closed off.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch throughout this design is garter stitch worked in the round. Garter stitch in circular knitting is achieved by alternating purl and knit rounds, creating the characteristic horizontal ridges and textured appearance associated with traditional garter stitch. This stitch is worked consistently from the cast-on edge through the body of the hat until the decreases begin. The pattern also incorporates decreases worked evenly around the hat during the crown shaping phase, with decreases repeated every other round to create a smooth, tapered finish.
Materials
The hat is knitted with Lana Grossa Lala Berlin Lovely yarn, a premium blend containing 52% alpaca, 18% cashmere, 18% pure wool, and 12% polyamide. This luxurious fiber composition provides softness, warmth, and durability. The yarn is supplied at a yardage of 90 meters per 50-gram ball. Yarn quantities vary by size: 50 grams for the smallest size (50–52 cm), and 100 grams for both larger sizes (53–55 cm and 56–58 cm). The pattern calls for one set of size 6 mm double-pointed needles to achieve the recommended gauge of 10 stitches and 20 rounds over a 10 x 10 cm swatch in garter stitch.
Construction Details
The hat begins with a cast-on of 44, 48, or 52 stitches (depending on size), distributed evenly across four double-pointed needles. After joining for working in the round and placing a beginning-of-round marker, the knitter works garter stitch in rounds until the piece measures 18.5 to 19.5 cm from the cast-on edge. The crown shaping then commences with a series of decrease rounds, reducing stitches in a controlled manner until only 18 stitches remain. The yarn is cut, threaded through the final stitches, and pulled tight to close the crown. All ends are woven in for a finished appearance.
