Product Description
Lana Grossa Poncho in Ecopuno
What is Being Made
This is a one-size poncho crafted using a combination of crochet and knitting techniques. The poncho features a colorful striped design worked in the main body using Tunisian crochet, with knitted ribbed cuffs added at the sleeve openings. The finished piece is constructed by seaming separate front and back panels together, leaving an open neckline for comfortable wear.
Techniques Used
The poncho employs Tunisian crochet as the primary construction method for the body. Tunisian crochet is a hybrid technique that combines elements of both crochet and knitting, with each row consisting of a forward pass and a return pass to create a dense, fabric-like texture. The back and front panels are worked flat in separate pieces and later seamed together using mattress stitch. The sleeve cuffs are created using knitting with a ribbed pattern, and finishing details include single crochet edging around the neckline and tassel embellishments at the bottom corners.
Stitches Used
- Tunisian simple stitch – the main stitch used throughout the body of the poncho, worked in a stripe sequence repeated multiple times
- Single crochet (sc) – used for the initial row on the back and for the finishing edging around the neckline
- Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches – combined in a 2x2 ribbed pattern (p2, k2) for the sleeve cuffs
- Selvage stitches – worked at the edges to create neat, finished edges for seaming
- Mattress stitch – used for seaming the cuff seams from the wrong side
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used to attach the finishing edging along open edges and the neckline
Materials
The poncho is made from Lana Grossa Ecopuno, a blend yarn containing 72% cotton, 17% Merino wool, and 11% baby alpaca. This fiber composition creates a breathable, soft, and durable fabric suitable for a wearable garment. The yarn is used in four coordinating colors: 150 grams each of Grey (color 56) and Ecru (color 46), and 100 grams each of Yellow Orange (color 33) and Dark Grey (color 15). The total yardage of Ecopuno is approximately 215 meters per 50 grams.
Tools required include a size 6 mm Tunisian crochet hook for the main body and a size 4.5 mm knitting needles for the ribbed cuffs. The gauge is 17.5 stitches and 17.5 rows over 10 centimeters in Tunisian simple stitch.
Construction Details
The back and front panels are worked separately from side to side using the Tunisian crochet hook. The stripe sequence is worked according to a chart, with rows 1 through 26 repeated six times, followed by rows 1 through 10 worked once more. After the main panels are complete, the pieces are pinned to measurements and blocked to shape. The shoulder seams are sewn together, leaving a 22-centimeter opening at the center for the neckline.
Sleeve cuffs are added by picking up 66 stitches evenly between markers placed 17 centimeters down from the shoulders on both the front and back panels. These stitches are worked in a 2x2 ribbed pattern for 14 centimeters, then bound off. The cuff seams are sewn using mattress stitch from the wrong side, and the cuffs are folded to the outside and tacked down with a few stitches for a finished look.
The finishing touches include a slip-stitch edging worked with three strands of Grey yarn held together along the open edges and around the entire neckline. Tassels are made in each of the four yarn colors and sewn to the bottom corners of the poncho for decorative detail.
