Lana Grossa Cool Wool Big is the DK weight of the Cool Wool series. The same high-quality superwash wool found throughout Lana Grossa yarns are now available in a larger weight. Lana Grossa Cool Wool Big Mélange Design 17 Pullover

What Is Being Made

This is a classic pullover sweater designed from the Merino Edition collection by Lana Grossa. The garment features a sophisticated cable knit pattern combined with twisted ribbing details, creating a textured, visually interesting fabric. The pullover is available in four size ranges: 36/38, 40/42, 44/46, and 48/50, making it suitable for a variety of body types. The finished sweater measures 73 cm in length at the back, with the front intentionally designed 9 cm shorter for a modern, slightly cropped silhouette.

Techniques Used

This pullover employs a bottom-up construction method, meaning the sweater is knitted starting from the hem and working upward toward the shoulders and neckline. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in continuous rounds, which requires seaming to join the pieces together at the sides and shoulders. The pattern also incorporates worked-in-the-round sections using a circular needle, particularly for neckline finishing. The cable pattern is a key design element, requiring the use of a cable needle to create the twisted, dimensional stitches that give the sweater its distinctive texture.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pullover features multiple stitch patterns working in harmony:

  • 3x3 Ribbing: A classic rib pattern that alternates three knit stitches with three purl stitches, creating vertical lines of texture. This stitch is used for the cuff and waistband areas to provide elasticity and a fitted finish.
  • Twisted Ribbing: An embellished variation of standard ribbing that uses knit-through-the-back-loop (k1tbl) and purl stitches on alternating rows. This creates a more refined, twisted appearance compared to standard ribbing and is used in the body sections between cable patterns.
  • Cable Patterns: The sweater incorporates two distinct cable charts (Chart A and Chart B) that create raised, twisted rope-like textures. Cable Chart A spans 15 stitches, while Cable Chart B is wider at 24 stitches, allowing for varied visual interest across the front and back of the garment.
  • Slip-Stitch Selvage: A finishing technique used at the edges of the work, where stitches are slipped rather than knitted to create neat, finished selvage edges that are easier to seam together.

Construction Details

The back and front panels are worked separately from the cast-on edge upward. The back piece is worked to a full 73 cm length, while the front is intentionally stopped at 64 cm (9 cm shorter), creating an asymmetrical hemline. Shaping occurs at the neckline using short-row techniques, which allow the knitter to add depth and contour to the neck opening without binding off stitches. The neck shaping involves leaving specific numbers of stitches unworked in a graduated sequence: 5 stitches once, 3 stitches once, 2 stitches once, and 1 stitch once. This creates a smooth, curved neckline. Stitches are placed on holders for the shoulders (37 to 53 stitches per side, depending on size) and the center neck (42 to 46 stitches), which are later joined using a seaming method.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pullover is knitted using Lana Grossa Cool Wool Big Mélange, a premium yarn composed of 100% pure wool. The yarn is available in the colorway Terracotta Mélange (color 348). Yardage requirements vary by size: 650 meters for size 36/38, 700 meters for size 40/42, 750 meters for size 44/46, and 800 meters for size 48/50. The yarn is supplied in 50-gram balls with a yardage of 120 meters per ball.

Tools Required

Knitters will need size 5 mm needles for this project. Specifically, the pattern calls for size 5 mm straight needles for the flat knitting sections and a 40 cm size 5 mm circular needle for any in-the-round sections, particularly the neckline. A cable needle is essential for manipulating stitches when working the cable patterns that define this sweater's visual character.
