Lana Grossa Elastico Design 20 Jacket

What Is Being Made

The Lana Grossa Elastico Design 20 is a classic knitted cardigan jacket available in three sizes: 36, 38/40, and 42. This seamed garment features a structured construction with a button front closure, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various occasions and seasons.

Techniques Used

This jacket is constructed using several key knitting techniques that create both structure and visual interest:

  • Bottom-Up Construction: The jacket is worked from the cast-on edge upward, allowing for easy fitting adjustments and modifications during the knitting process.
  • Worked Flat: All pieces are knitted flat on straight needles rather than in the round, then seamed together for a polished, professional finish.
  • Seamed Assembly: Individual pieces (front panels, back, and sleeves) are knitted separately and then sewn together, creating clean seams and allowing for precise shaping.
  • Lace Detailing: An eyelet pattern adds delicate, openwork texture to the garment, creating visual sophistication and allowing for subtle breathability.

Stitches Used

The Elastico Design 20 employs a combination of fundamental and decorative stitches:

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch throughout most of the garment, created by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows, producing a smooth, classic fabric.
  • Ribbed Pattern (Rib patt): A two-by-two rib (P2, K2) is used for the cuffs and lower edges, providing elasticity and a finished appearance that hugs the body comfortably.
  • Eyelet Pattern: A charted lace pattern worked over a multiple of four stitches, featuring yarn overs and decreases to create decorative holes. This pattern is repeated across the sleeves and other designated areas, with rows 1–8 forming the complete pattern repeat.
  • Slip Stitch Selvage: A refined edge finish using slip stitches worked through the back loop on right-side rows and through the back loop on wrong-side rows, creating neat, professional-looking seams.

Materials and Specifications

The Elastico Design 20 is knitted with premium materials chosen for comfort and durability:

  • Yarn: Lana Grossa Elastico (Élité line), a high-quality blend of 96% cotton and 4% polyester. This composition provides breathability, slight stretch, and easy care. Yardage is 160 meters per 50-gram ball. Total yarn requirements are 450 grams for size 36, 500 grams for size 38/40, and 550 grams for size 42.
  • Color: Beige (color 97), a versatile neutral shade that coordinates easily with various wardrobes.
  • Needles: Size 2.5 mm and 3.5 mm straight needles for the main fabric, with a size 2.5 mm circular needle (40 cm long) for any ribbed sections or finishing work.
  • Crochet Hook: A size 3 mm crochet hook is included for finishing techniques.
  • Buttons: Five 20 mm buttons by UNION KNOPF (item 453463, color 16) for the front closure, providing both function and aesthetic appeal.

Construction Details

The jacket features thoughtful shaping and finishing throughout. The sleeves begin with a ribbed cuff worked on smaller needles, then transition to larger needles for the eyelet pattern section. Strategic increases along the sleeve cap create proper fit and mobility. The front panels include neck shaping with graduated bind-offs that create a comfortable neckline, while the back provides a stable foundation. All pieces are carefully measured to ensure proper proportions across the three size options, with measurements given in centimeters from the cast-on edge to key shaping points.
