Lana Grossa Pullover in Cool Merino

What is Being Made

This is a classic pullover sweater designed in three sizes (36/38, 40/42, and 44/46). The garment features a structured silhouette with raglan sleeve shaping, a crew neckline with gradual bind-offs, and includes a coordinating belt component. The pullover is constructed using a bottom-up seamed method, making it an ideal project for knitters who prefer working flat sections rather than in the round for the body and sleeves.

Techniques Used

This pullover employs several intermediate knitting techniques:

  • Bottom-up construction: The back, front, and sleeves are worked from the cast-on edge upward, allowing for easy fitting adjustments during the knitting process
  • Worked flat: All major pieces are worked flat on straight needles, then seamed together at the end for a professional finish
  • Raglan shaping: Both the back and front feature raglan armhole decreases that create diagonal seam lines from the underarm to the neckline
  • Full-fashion decreases and increases: The sleeves incorporate full-fashion shaping (also called fashioned shaping), where decreases and increases are worked several stitches in from the edges using techniques like k2tog, skp, and yarn overs to create decorative, aligned stitch columns
  • Neck shaping: The front neckline is shaped through sequential bind-offs that create a gradual curve
  • Seamed construction: All pieces are sewn together after completion, requiring finishing work

Stitches Used

  • Ribbed pattern (K2, P2): Used for the cuff sections of the sleeves and the belt, providing elasticity and a finished edge
  • Stockinette stitch (St st): The primary stitch throughout the body and sleeves, created by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows for a smooth, classic fabric
  • Yarn overs (yo): Incorporated into the full-fashion increases on the sleeves, creating small decorative eyelets as part of the shaping detail
  • Knit two together (k2tog) and slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over (skp): Used for full-fashion decreases that lean in opposite directions for balanced, visually appealing shaping
  • Purl through back loop (p1tbl): Used to close the yarn overs created during increases on the following wrong-side row

Materials

The Lana Grossa Pullover in Cool Merino requires 500 (550, 600) grams of Lana Grossa Cool Merino yarn, depending on size. This yarn is composed of 90% Merino wool and 10% polyamide, offering a blend of softness, breathability, and durability. The yarn has a yardage of 150 meters per 50 grams, making it a worsted-weight yarn suitable for creating a fabric with good drape and structure.

The project requires size 5 mm and 5.5 mm straight needles for the main construction, along with a size 5 mm circular needle for any ribbed sections that may benefit from circular needle work. The color shown in the lookbook is Fuchsia (col 2), a vibrant option that showcases the yarn's rich color saturation.

Construction Overview

The back piece is worked first in stockinette stitch, beginning with ribbed edging before transitioning to the larger needle size. Raglan decreases are introduced at the armhole, and the piece is worked straight until the shoulder bind-off. The front follows the same construction method as the back until the raglan shaping begins, at which point neck shaping is introduced through centered bind-offs and graduated decreases at each neck edge.

The sleeves are cast on and worked in rib for 10 centimeters before switching to the larger needle size and stockinette stitch. Full-fashion increases are worked at regular intervals to shape the sleeve cap, creating a tapered fit from cuff to underarm. The sleeve cap is then shaped with bind-offs and full-fashion decreases that mirror the raglan shaping of the body.

A coordinating belt is also included in the pattern, worked in ribbed pattern for elasticity and structure. All pieces are finished through seaming, creating clean
