Lana Grossa 22 Pullover in Cool Wool Big

What Is Being Made

This is a classic pullover sweater designed from the Merino Edition collection by Lana Grossa. The garment features a sophisticated construction with integrated cable and lace pattern details, available in four size ranges: 36/38, 40/42, 44/46, and 48/50. The pullover is worked in a structured, tailored style with raglan sleeves and a seamed construction method.

Techniques Used

The Lana Grossa 22 Pullover employs several advanced knitting techniques to create its distinctive appearance:

  • Bottom-up construction: The sweater is knitted from the bottom edge upward, allowing for easy length adjustments and a natural progression of shaping.
  • Worked flat: All pieces are knitted flat on straight needles rather than in the round, then seamed together for a polished, professional finish.
  • Cable knitting: Two separate cable charts (Chart A and Chart B) are integrated into the raglan shaping, creating textured vertical lines that add visual interest and dimension to the front of the garment.
  • Lace patterning: Delicate lace elements are incorporated throughout the design, contributing to the refined aesthetic.
  • Raglan shaping: The sleeves are shaped using raglan decreases, which create diagonal lines from the underarm to the neckline. Full-fashion decreases are worked to maintain neat, aligned edges.
  • Seamed construction: Individual pieces are knitted separately and then seamed together, providing structure and durability.

Stitches Used

The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches combined with more complex stitch work:

  • Stockinette stitch (St st): The primary fabric stitch, created by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows, providing a smooth, classic appearance.
  • Ribbed knit: A k2, p2 (knit 2, purl 2) rib pattern is used for the cuff areas, creating elastic, fitted edges that hug the body.
  • Cable stitches: Worked according to Charts A and B, these stitches are created by crossing groups of stitches over one another using a cable needle, forming the characteristic twisted rope-like texture.
  • Full-fashion decreases: Worked at the edges using k2tog (knit two together) and skp (slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over) techniques, these decreases are positioned one stitch in from the selvage edge to create neat, visible decrease lines.
  • Selvage stitches: Edge stitches worked at the beginning and end of rows to create clean, finished edges suitable for seaming.

Materials and Tools

The Lana Grossa 22 Pullover is designed to be worked in Lana Grossa Cool Wool Big, a premium yarn composed of 100% pure wool. The yardage requirements vary by size: 550 grams (approximately 660 meters) for size 36/38, increasing to 700 grams (approximately 840 meters) for size 48/50. The recommended color is Chestnut (color number 964), a warm, neutral tone suitable for versatile styling.

The pattern calls for size 4.5 mm straight needles for working the flat pieces, a size 4.5 mm circular needle measuring 40 centimeters long for any sections requiring circular knitting, and a cable needle for manipulating stitches during cable work. Cool Wool Big is a worsted-weight yarn with a yardage of 120 meters per 50-gram ball, making it ideal for creating a fabric with good drape and durability.

Construction Details

The sweater begins with casting on stitches for the back and sleeves. The back and front pieces are worked in stockinette stitch with cable chart patterns integrated into the raglan decreases. Sleeves are increased gradually from the cuff upward, with different increase frequencies depending on the size, ensuring proper sleeve cap shaping. Once pieces reach their specified lengths, raglan shaping is introduced through strategic bind-offs and decreases worked in conjunction with the cable patterns. The full-fashion decreases create a professional, tailored appearance along the raglan lines. All pieces are then seamed together to complete the finished garment, creating a structured, wearable pullover with excellent stitch definition from the Cool
