Lana Grossa Pullover in Linea Pura Solo

What is Being Made

This is a lightweight pullover sweater designed in two sizes (36–40 and 42–46) using the Lana Grossa Solo Lino yarn. The garment features an open mesh pattern throughout, creating an airy, breathable fabric ideal for warm-weather wear. The pullover is constructed with a classic crew neckline and set-in sleeves, making it a versatile layering piece or standalone summer garment.

Techniques Used

The Lana Grossa Pullover is worked using a bottom-up seamed construction, meaning pieces are knitted individually from the cast-on edge upward, then joined together with seams. The garment is worked flat on straight needles, with a transition to a circular needle when necessary to accommodate increased stitch counts during sleeve and body shaping.

Key shaping techniques include full-fashion increases at the side seams, which create a neat, decorative line of paired increases that enhance the garment's finished appearance. The pattern also incorporates a decorative bind-off technique for the neckline, adding a refined edge detail. Selvage stitches are worked on every row—slipping the first stitch knitwise and knitting the last stitch—to create clean, finished side edges suitable for seaming.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern is a mesh pattern, worked according to a provided chart. This open lace-like stitch creates the characteristic airy fabric of the design. The mesh pattern is combined with garter stitch sections positioned adjacent to the selvage stitches, providing structural stability at the edges. Stockinette stitch principles underpin the construction, with the mesh pattern creating deliberate openings through yarn overs and decreases.

Materials

The pullover is knitted with Lana Grossa Solo Lino, a yarn composition of 80% recycled linen (viscose) and 20% linen. This blend creates a lightweight, breathable fabric with excellent drape, making it ideal for warm climates. The yarn is worked at a gauge of 16 stitches and 32 rows over 10 × 10 centimeters on size 5 mm needles.

Yardage requirements are 550 grams (approximately 660 meters) for the smaller size and 600 grams (approximately 720 meters) for the larger size. The recommended color is Yellow (color 32). Size 5 mm straight needles are used for the flat construction, along with a size 5 mm circular needle measuring 100 centimeters long for working in the round when necessary during increases. A cable needle is also required for any cable techniques that may appear in the pattern.

Construction Details

The back panel begins with 93 (99) cast-on stitches and is worked in mesh pattern for 71 (77) rows, measuring 22 (24) centimeters from the cast-on edge. Side and sleeve shaping is accomplished through full-fashion increases at each end of 19 right-side rows, bringing the stitch count to 131 (137) stitches. Sleeve cap stitches are then cast on at the beginning of two consecutive rows—30 stitches per row—creating a total of 191 (197) stitches. The pattern is repositioned with selvage stitches, garter stitch columns, and the mesh pattern centered between them. An additional 70 rows are worked before the neckline is shaped using a decorative bind-off technique for the center 33 stitches, with remaining stitches placed on holders for later finishing.

The front panel is worked identically to the back until 115 (121) rows have been completed, at which point the neckline shaping diverges from the back panel instructions to create the front neck opening.
