Lana Grossa 23 Top in Ecopuno Dégradé

What is Being Made

The Lana Grossa 23 Top is a knitted pullover sweater designed in one size, featuring a classic crew neckline and set-in sleeves. This garment showcases a sophisticated color-degradé effect through the yarn choice, creating a subtle gradient from light blue through pale blue to light grey across the finished piece.

Construction Method

This top is constructed using a bottom-up, seamed approach, with the back, front, and sleeves worked separately on flat needles before being joined together. The body pieces are worked flat in rows, while the sleeves are also worked flat and subsequently attached to the armholes. This traditional construction method allows for precise shaping at the neck and armholes.

Techniques Used

  • Lace patterning: The main body incorporates a charted lace pattern worked over 12 rows, repeated six times, followed by rows 13–24 of the pattern chart. This creates an openwork texture that adds visual interest while maintaining the garment's drape.
  • Garter stitch: Used for the sleeves (41 rows from cast-on) and as selvage stitches on every row of all pieces, providing a neat, finished edge and structural stability.
  • Seaming: All pieces are sewn together after completion, creating clean, professional seams.
  • Shaping techniques: Strategic bind-offs at the armholes and neckline create the fitted silhouette, with graduated decreases at the neck for a comfortable fit.

Stitches and Stitch Details

  • Selvage stitches: Slip first stitch knitwise and knit last stitch on every row for neat edges.
  • Garter stitch: Knit every row, creating a textured, reversible fabric used for sleeve sections and edge finishing.
  • Lace pattern: Charted pattern incorporating yarn-overs and decreases; on wrong-side rows, all stitches are purled and yarn-overs are worked as charted.
  • Bind-off shaping: Center stitches bound off for neckline opening, with graduated single-stitch decreases at neck edges for a smooth curve.

Materials and Specifications

The top requires 200 grams of Lana Grossa Ecopuno Dégradé yarn in colorway 410 (Light Blue/Pale Blue/Light Grey). This yarn is composed of 70% cotton, 19% Merino wool, and 11% baby alpaca, offering a breathable, soft blend with approximately 380 meters per 100 grams. The fiber content ensures comfort and durability while the dégradé colorway provides the subtle color transition throughout the finished garment.

Needles and tools required: Size 4 mm straight needles or needles appropriate for flat knitting, plus one size 4 mm circular needle measuring 40 cm long (used as a straight needle or for holding stitches during construction).

Gauge and Finished Measurements

Accurate gauge is essential for this design. In the charted lace pattern on size 4 mm needles: 21 stitches and 28 rows measure 10 x 10 centimeters. In garter stitch on size 4 mm needles: 22 stitches and 40 rows measure 10 x 10 centimeters. The finished top is designed in one size, with specific measurements for armhole depth (16 centimeters from armhole markers), total shoulder length (50 rows or 18 centimeters from armhole markers), and sleeve length (41 rows or 10 centimeters from cast-on).

Design Details

The back and front panels are cast on with 120 and 120 stitches respectively, providing width across the body. The lace pattern creates an elegant, semi-transparent texture that contrasts with the solid garter-stitch sleeves. Sleeve cap shaping is minimal, relying on the set-in construction for a classic, tailored fit. The neckline features graduated bind-offs and decreases that create a smooth, comfortable opening suitable for a crew neck finish.
