Lana Grossa Bingo Hat: Seamless Knit Design

What Is Being Made

The Lana Grossa Hat in Bingo is a classic, fitted knit hat designed to fit head circumferences of 52–55 cm or 56–59 cm. The finished hat measures approximately 25 cm (or 27.5 cm for the larger size) in width and 23–24 cm in length. This design, labeled Design 27 from the Merino Edition collection, is crafted from 100% pure wool in a rich Plum colorway (color 194), offering warmth and durability for everyday wear.

Techniques Used

This hat is constructed using bottom-up, seamless construction, meaning it is worked from the cast-on edge upward in a continuous spiral without seaming. The hat is worked in the round using double-pointed needles, which creates a smooth, tubular fabric with no visible seams. This seamless approach provides a comfortable, professional finish ideal for close-fitting headwear.

The pattern employs strategic increases and decreases to shape the crown. After the initial ribbed cuff, stitches are increased evenly across a transition round, then decreased in a series of regularly spaced decrease rounds that taper the hat toward the top. The final stitches are gathered and secured by drawing the yarn through remaining stitches and pulling tight, creating a neat closure.

Stitches Used

The Bingo Hat features two primary stitch patterns:

  • Ribbed Pattern (K2, P2): A classic knit-two, purl-two rib creates the cuff at the base of the hat. This elastic ribbing, worked for 5 cm from the cast-on edge, provides stretch and helps the hat stay securely in place on the head.
  • Moss Stitch: The main body of the hat is worked in moss stitch, a textured reversible pattern created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard formation. Rounds 1 and 2 work as purl-one, knit-one around, while rounds 3 and 4 reverse to knit-one, purl-one around. This four-round repeat creates a subtle, dimensional texture that adds visual interest and helps the hat maintain its shape.

Materials and Gauge

The pattern calls for 100 grams of Lana Grossa Bingo yarn, a 100% pure wool yarn with a yardage of 80 meters per 50-gram ball. Two sets of double-pointed needles are required: size 4.5 mm for the ribbed cuff and size 5 mm for the main body and crown shaping. The larger needle size allows for the gauge increase needed to transition from the fitted ribbing to the more relaxed moss stitch section.

The recommended gauge is 18 stitches and 26 rounds equal 10 x 10 centimeters in moss stitch on size 5 mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit; knitters are advised to work a gauge swatch before beginning the project, using the recommended needles, yarn, and pattern stitch, and blocking it as the finished hat would be blocked.

Construction Summary

The hat begins with a cast-on of 88 stitches (or 96 for the larger size), distributed evenly across four double-pointed needles. After working the ribbed cuff, stitches are increased to 90 (or 100) and the moss stitch body is worked until the piece measures 17–18 cm from the cast-on. Crown shaping then begins with marker placement and a series of purl-three-together decreases worked before each marker, reducing stitches progressively until only 18–20 stitches remain. A final knit-two-together round reduces the crown to 9–10 stitches, which are then secured and woven in for a finished, polished appearance.
