Lana Grossa 27 Pullover in Linea Pura Fourseason

What is Being Made

This is a knitted pullover sweater designed as part of the Linea Pura collection by Lana Grossa. The pullover features a sophisticated lace pattern throughout and is constructed in one size with a classic crew neckline. The garment is worked in a light blue colorway and combines stockinette stitch with decorative eyelet lace patterning for an elegant, breathable design suitable for transitional seasons.

Construction Method and Techniques

The pullover is constructed using the bottom-up seamed method, meaning the body and sleeves are knitted separately from the cast-on edge upward, then assembled together. The pieces are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, requiring seaming to join the front, back, and sleeves.

The design employs full-fashion shaping at the underarm and shoulders, a technique that creates a refined, tailored appearance by increasing and binding off stitches in a manner that produces decorative stepped edges rather than abrupt changes in width. This method is characteristic of high-quality, professionally finished knitwear.

Two-stitch selvage edges are used throughout the pattern to create neat, finished side seams. This technique involves slipping stitches at the edges in a specific manner—slipping knitwise with yarn in back on right-side rows and slipping purlwise with yarn in front on wrong-side rows—which produces a chain-like edge that is easier to seam and looks more polished.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch used for the main fabric, created by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows. This produces the smooth, flat surface characteristic of classic knitwear.
  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch (Rev St st): Used for accent columns and selvage stitches, this reverses the stockinette pattern by purling on right-side rows and knitting on wrong-side rows, creating a textured, bumpy surface.
  • Rib Pattern (K1, P1): A knit-one, purl-one alternating pattern used for the cuff sections of the sleeves, providing stretch and elasticity to keep the garment fitted at the wrists.
  • Eyelet Lace Pattern: A decorative lace motif worked from a chart that incorporates yarn overs and decreases to create small holes and openwork sections. The pattern is strategically placed and repeated across the garment for visual interest and breathability. Chart rows 10 through 33 are worked, with rows 18 through 33 repeated to build the lace design.

Materials and Tools

The pullover requires 450 grams of Lana Grossa Fourseason yarn, a premium blend composed of 45% extrafine organic Merino wool, 40% organic cotton, and 15% recycled cashmere. This fiber content provides a luxurious hand feel, breathability from the cotton component, and temperature-regulating properties ideal for transitional wear. The yarn is worked at a gauge of 105 meters per 50 grams.

The project is knitted on size 4.5 and 5 millimeter needles. The smaller 4.5 mm needles are used for the ribbed cuff sections to create a tighter, more elastic fabric, while the larger 5 mm needles are used for the main body and lace pattern sections to achieve the intended gauge and drape. The pattern specifies working in light blue (color 1) for the finished garment.

Pattern Details and Shaping

The back and front pieces are worked identically. After casting on and working the initial ribbed section on smaller needles, the piece is transitioned to the larger needles and the eyelet lace pattern is introduced. The body is worked flat until reaching the underarm, where full-fashion increases are worked at each end of the row for 5 right-side rows, adding 1 stitch at each edge per increase row for a total of 10 new stitches. These increased stitches are then incorporated into the established lace pattern.

After the underarm shaping is complete, the piece continues in pattern for 30 rows total from the last increase row, measuring approximately 12 centimeters. Shoulder shaping is accomplished through strategic bind-offs: 6 stitches are bound off twice at each shoulder edge, followed by 5 stitches bound off four times, creating a graduated
