Lana Grossa Arm Warmers in Landlust Alpaka Merino

What Is Being Made

These arm warmers are a pair of seamless, tubular accessories designed to fit 16 cm in circumference and measure 21 cm in length. The design features a thumb opening for comfortable wear and practical functionality. Two identical pieces are created using the same pattern and construction method.

Techniques Used

The arm warmers are constructed using several key knitting techniques:

  • Bottom-up construction: The pieces are worked from the cast-on edge upward toward the bind-off edge, allowing for easy length adjustments and intuitive sizing.
  • Seamless, worked in the round: Using double-pointed needles, the fabric is created in continuous rounds rather than flat pieces, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, professional finish.
  • Striped colorwork: The design incorporates color changes, with the lower portion worked in one color and the upper ribbed cuff worked in a contrasting color. Three color combination options are provided: Pink and Dark Orange, Taupe and Pink, or Dark Orange and Taupe.
  • Thumb opening: A functional opening is created through strategic bind-off and cast-on techniques, allowing the wearer to position their thumb comfortably.

Stitches Used

Two primary stitch patterns create the textured design:

  • Waffle stitch: This textured pattern is worked over a multiple of 4 stitches and alternates between ribbed rounds (purl 2, knit 2) and stockinette rounds (knit all). The waffle stitch creates a dimensional, tactile fabric that measures 19 stitches and 28 rounds over 10 cm on size 4 mm needles.
  • Rib pattern: A simple knit 2, purl 2 ribbing is used for the upper 3 cm cuff, providing stretch and a finished edge that hugs the arm comfortably.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: Lana Grossa Landlust Alpaka Merino 100, a premium blend of 50% Merino wool and 50% baby alpaca, is used throughout. This yarn provides softness, warmth, and breathability. The project requires 50 grams each of two contrasting colors from the available palette, totaling 100 grams per pair of arm warmers. At 100 meters per 50 grams, the yarn offers excellent yardage for this accessory project.

Needles: One set of size 4 mm double-pointed needles is required. Double-pointed needles enable seamless, in-the-round construction and accommodate the 32 cast-on stitches distributed evenly across four needles at 8 stitches per needle.

Additional supplies: A beginning-of-round marker is needed to track the start of each round at the center of the palm.

Construction Overview

The arm warmers begin with a 32-stitch cast-on worked in the round on double-pointed needles. The lower 15 cm is worked in waffle stitch using the first color, creating the textured main body. A thumb opening is then created by binding off and casting on 6 stitches on the fourth needle. The pattern continues for an additional 3 cm until the total length reaches 18 cm from the cast-on edge. The final 3 cm upper cuff is worked in rib pattern using the contrasting color, providing a refined, elastic finish. All stitches are bound off in ribbing to complete the piece.
