Lana Grossa Stole in Alpaca Moda

What is Being Made

This is a luxurious diagonal-worked stole measuring 172 x 194 cm, designed as an elegant accessory piece. The stole is constructed using a seamless knitting technique that creates a sophisticated wrap suitable for layering over shoulders or wearing as a generous shawl.

Craft and Construction Method

The stole is knitted flat on straight needles using a seamless construction method. The piece is worked at the diagonal, beginning with a small cast-on of 5 stitches and gradually expanding through strategic increases before tapering back down to a single stitch for binding off. This diagonal approach creates an interesting geometric flow to the finished garment.

Techniques Used

  • Double increases (dbl inc): A shaping technique that increases two stitches in a single row by knitting into the row below the next stitch, creating a yarn over, then knitting the next stitch on the left needle
  • Decreases: Including k3tog tbl (knit three together through the back loop) and k5tog tbl to shape and taper the stole
  • Stripe patterning: Color changes worked throughout the piece in 24-row repeats
  • Ribbed edging: Knit and purl stitches worked along the selvage edges for definition
  • Blocking: The finished piece is pinned to measurements and blocked to achieve proper dimensions and even tension

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern is rib patterning, worked as k1, p1 (knit one, purl one) throughout the body of the stole. The ribbed texture provides elasticity and visual interest while maintaining the structural integrity of the piece as it expands and contracts during construction.

The stripe pattern is worked in 24-row repeats, alternating between three colors: Beige, Dark Red, and Orange. The stripe sequence continues throughout the piece and concludes with a final 24-row section in Beige, creating a balanced color composition.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The stole is constructed using Lana Grossa Alpaca Moda, a premium yarn composed of 74% baby alpaca, 13% Merino wool, and 13% polyamide. This fiber blend provides softness, warmth, and durability. The yarn is worked at a yardage of 135 meters per 50-gram ball.

The project requires 150 grams each of three colorways: Camel (col 3), Dark Red (col 10), and Orange (col 11), for a total of 450 grams of yarn.

Needles and Gauge

Size 7 mm needles are used throughout the project. The recommended gauge is 11 stitches and 21 rows measured over a 10 x 10 centimeter swatch worked in rib pattern on size 7 mm needles. Creating an accurate gauge swatch before beginning is essential to ensure the finished stole achieves the correct finished dimensions.

Pattern Construction Details

The stole construction is divided into distinct phases. The initial expansion phase works rows 1 through 96, during which stitches increase from 5 to 197 stitches on the needle through double increases worked on right-side rows. Following this expansion, a transition phase maintains the stitch count for 120 additional rows (rows 97 through 216) by replacing double increases with a single decrease on alternating rows. The final tapering phase systematically decreases stitches on both sides until only 5 stitches remain, which are then bound off together using a k5tog tbl decrease.
