Lang 252-37 Cardigan by LANGYARNS SPLASH

What Is Being Made

The Lang 252-37 is a classic cardigan (also referred to as a gilet or vest) designed by LANGYARNS SPLASH. This garment is available in two size ranges: S–M and L–XL, with a bust measurement of 92 cm for the smaller size and 102 cm for the larger size. The finished length is 66 cm (26 inches), making it a standard-length cardigan suitable for layering or wearing as a standalone piece. The cardigan features a button front closure with two buttons and is worked in a bottom-up construction method with seamed pieces.

Techniques Used

This cardigan is constructed using the bottom-up seamed method, meaning the pieces are knitted individually from the lower edge upward and then joined together with seams. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for easy shaping and the creation of distinct front and back panels. The front panels are specifically designed to accommodate the button band and button placket. This traditional construction method provides excellent stitch definition and allows for precise sizing adjustments.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The cardigan incorporates three distinct stitch patterns throughout the design:

  • Pattern I: A textured rib pattern worked on 4mm needles, created with the sequence of 1 edge stitch, then repeating *1 purl stitch, 2 knit stitches, 1 purl stitch*. On subsequent rows, stitches are knitted as they face you, creating a 2x2 rib effect (2 purl stitches alternating with 2 knit stitches). This pattern is typically used for ribbed edgings and cuffs to provide elasticity and a finished appearance.
  • Pattern II: Stockinette stitch (also called jersey stitch) worked on 5mm needles, with knit stitches on the right side and purl stitches on the wrong side. This smooth, classic stitch creates the main fabric body of the cardigan.
  • Pattern III: Reverse stockinette stitch, also worked on 5mm needles, with purl stitches on the right side and knit stitches on the wrong side. This creates a textured, bumpy surface and may be used as a decorative contrast or accent area.

Materials and Tools

This cardigan is knitted with LANGYARNS SPLASH, a blended yarn composed of cotton and acrylic (polyacryl). The yarn is available in the colorway off-white-blue (also described as broken white-blue), with color number 984.0006. The yardage requirement is 700 grams for size S–M and 800 grams for size L–XL, equivalent to 7 or 8 balls respectively.

The pattern requires two sets of LANGYARNS / ADDI knitting needles: size 4mm (US 6, UK 8) for the ribbed sections and size 5mm (US 8, UK 6) for the main stitch patterns. The size difference between needles allows for proper gauge control and ensures that ribbed areas remain elastic while the body fabric lies smoothly. Additionally, two buttons are needed to complete the front closure of the cardigan.

Yarn Composition and Suitability

The cotton-acrylic blend of LANGYARNS SPLASH offers practical advantages for a cardigan: cotton provides breathability and a natural drape, while acrylic adds durability, easy care, and color retention. This blend is well-suited for a garment intended for regular wear and washing, making the finished cardigan both comfortable and low-maintenance.
