Lang 272-31 Sweater – Knitted Raglan Design

What Is Being Made

The Lang 272-31 is a classic knitted sweater featuring a raglan sleeve construction, designed in two sizes: S–M with a bust measurement of 65¼" (166 cm) and L–XL with a bust measurement of 73¼" (186 cm). The finished length is 30" (76 cm) for both sizes. This pullover-style garment combines comfortable everyday wearability with traditional knitwear shaping techniques.

Knitting Techniques Used

This sweater employs several fundamental knitting construction methods to achieve its finished structure:

  • Bottom-up construction: The garment is worked from the cuffs upward, beginning with the sleeves and progressing to the body sections.
  • Worked flat: The main body and sleeves are knitted on straight needles in flat rows rather than in continuous rounds, allowing for easier shaping and seaming.
  • Worked in the round: A short circular needle is used for certain sections, providing flexibility in construction method.
  • Seamed assembly: Individual pieces are completed separately and then joined together using seaming techniques, with raglan seams closed using short stitches for a neat finish.
  • Raglan sleeve shaping: The sleeves feature a graduated raglan cap that decreases over 70–78 rows, creating the characteristic diagonal line from underarm to neckline.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Lang 272-31 uses two primary stitch patterns:

  • Rib stitch (K1:P1): Worked on US 2.5 (3mm) needles at the cuffs and lower edges. Ribbing is worked for 1¼" (3 cm) on the sleeves, creating an elastic, fitted edge that hugs the wrist and prevents rolling.
  • Stockinette stitch: The main fabric throughout the sweater body and sleeves, worked on US 6 (4mm) needles. Stockinette is created by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows, producing the classic smooth, flat knit fabric with a V-shaped texture.

Shaping and Construction Details

The sweater incorporates strategic shaping to create a fitted silhouette:

  • Sleeve cap shaping: Sleeves begin with 62 stitches (S–M) or 70 stitches (L–XL) at the cuff. After ribbing, decreases are worked on the first stockinette row to establish the working stitch count of 47 or 55 stitches. Side shaping then increases 2 stitches every 8 rows for 13 repeats, building the sleeve width to 73 or 81 stitches before the raglan cap begins.
  • Raglan cap decrease: One stitch is bound off at the beginning of consecutive rows over 70–78 rows, gradually tapering the sleeve cap. The remaining 3 stitches are bound off when the raglan measures 8¾" (S–M) or 10" (L–XL).
  • Seam placement: Side seams remain open for the first 15¼" (S–M) or 14¼" (L–XL) from the cast-on edge, allowing for armhole depth before closure.

Materials and Gauge

The Lang 272-31 is designed to be worked with LANGYARNS REGINA, a luxurious blend yarn composed of cotton, baby alpaca, silk, and wool. The pattern requires 500 grams (approximately 10 balls) for size S–M or 600 grams (approximately 12 balls) for size L–XL in the colorway Ivy 1093.0093.

Needles required include ADDI brand knitting needles in US 2.5 (3mm) for ribbing and a short circular needle of the same size, plus US 6 (4mm) needles for the main stockinette fabric.

The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 31 rows over 4" (10 cm) when worked in stockinette stitch on US 6 (4mm) needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements.
