Lang 274-69 Cardigan by Lang Yarns

What Is Being Made

The Lang 274-69 is a classic knitted cardigan designed in four sizes (S, M, L, XL) with finished bust measurements ranging from 37¾" to 48" (96–122 cm) and a total length of 33½" (85 cm). This is a button-front cardigan worked in a timeless silhouette, featuring structured shaping at the sides and armholes, with a ribbed neckline and cuffs for a refined finish.

Techniques Used

This cardigan is constructed using a bottom-up, seamed, and worked-flat method. The garment pieces—back, left front, and right front—are knitted individually in flat rows on straight needles, then seamed together to create the finished cardigan. The bottom-up construction allows for easy fitting adjustments and straightforward length customization. Side shaping is achieved through strategic decreases worked at regular intervals (every 6th or 8th row depending on size), creating a fitted silhouette. Armhole shaping is accomplished by binding off stitches at the beginning of right-side rows, and shoulder shaping uses a stepped bind-off technique to create a smooth cap. A single button closure is featured, with a corresponding buttonhole worked into the right front during neck shaping.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch throughout the cardigan body, created by knitting all stitches on right-side rows and purling all stitches on wrong-side rows. This produces a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-shaped texture on the public-facing side.
  • Ribbed Stitch (K1:P1): Used for structural edging at cuffs, hem, and neckline. Worked as *p1, k1* across an even number of stitches, alternating on each row to create vertical columns of texture that provide elasticity and a polished border.
  • Decreases: Slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over (sl1, k1, psso) is used for side shaping and armhole decreases, creating a neat left-leaning decrease line.
  • Bind-Off: Used to secure stitches at armholes and shoulders, with stepped bind-offs creating graduated shoulder shaping for proper garment fit.

Materials

This pattern calls for Lang Yarns Phoenix, a merino extrafine yarn that is mulesing-free and blended with nylon for durability and elasticity. Yardage requirements are 300 g (approximately 3 balls) for sizes S and M, and 400 g (approximately 4 balls) for sizes L and XL, in the colorway bordeaux 1107.0064. Knitting needles required are ADDI needles in US size 10.5–11 (7 mm–8 mm), appropriate for the yarn weight and desired fabric drape. One button is needed to complete the cardigan closure.
