Lang Scarf and Snake Knitting Pattern

What Is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern from Lang Yarns produces two coordinated accessories: a scarf and a decorative snake toy. The scarf measures approximately 24 x 120 cm (9½" x 47¼"), while the snake is a stuffed toy companion piece. Both projects use the same yarn and are worked from the same pattern instructions, making them ideal as a matching set or gift pairing.

Craft and Techniques

This is a knitting project worked using bottom-up construction with flat knitting (not in the round). The pieces are seamed together after knitting is complete. The pattern employs strategic shaping through increases and decreases to create the distinctive silhouette of both garments.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used

  • Stocking Stitch (Stockinette Stitch): The primary stitch pattern, worked as knit on the right side and purl on the wrong side, creating a smooth, classic fabric texture
  • Increases: Multiple increase techniques are used throughout the pattern, including working twice into stitches to expand the width systematically
  • Knit Two Together (k2tog): Used during the final decrease rows to gradually reduce stitch count and shape the pieces
  • Edge Stitches: Single edge stitches are maintained throughout for clean selvage edges that seam neatly

Materials and Tools

The pattern calls for Lang Yarns Merino 150 Dégradé, an extra fine merino wool that is mulesing-free. For the scarf, use 150 grams (3 balls) in the blue-orange-brick colorway (40.0002). For the snake, use 150 grams (3 balls) in the green-bordeaux-salmon colorway (40.0003). Knitting is worked on ADDI knitting needles in size 4mm (US 6, UK 8). Additional materials include washable stuffing for the snake toy and a pompom card with approximately 3.5 cm (1½") diameter to create finishing details.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 23 stitches = 10 cm (4") wide and 32 rows = 10 cm (4") long using Pattern I on 4mm needles. Maintaining this gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions of both the scarf and snake.

Construction Overview

The project begins by casting on 10 stitches and working in stocking stitch. A series of strategic increases are worked at regular intervals (Rows 3, 7, 11, 15, 19, 23, and 27) to expand the piece from 10 stitches to a maximum of 66 stitches. After reaching approximately 112 cm (44") in length, the pattern transitions to a final decrease phase, systematically reducing stitches back down through rows spaced at regular intervals until the piece is complete. The seamed construction allows the flat-knitted panels to be joined together to create the three-dimensional form of both the scarf and the accompanying snake accessory.
