What is Being Made

The Lang PTO28-16 Wrist Warmers are a pair of knitted wrist warmers designed to measure approximately 15 x 16 cm (6" x 6¼"). These are practical hand-warming accessories created using a bottom-up construction method, worked flat on straight needles and then seamed together for a finished garment.

Techniques Used

This knitting project employs several key techniques to create visual interest and structure:

• Bottom-up construction: The wrist warmers are knitted from the cuff upward, beginning with a cast-on edge and building toward the finished length.
• Flat knitting: The pieces are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, requiring seaming to join the edges once complete.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The wrist warmers incorporate three distinct stitch patterns worked across different sections:

• Pattern I (Ribbing): A classic knit 1, purl 1 (k1, p1) ribbing worked on 3.5mm needles for the cuff edge. This elastic ribbing helps the wrist warmers stay securely in place.
• Pattern II (Trellis Cable Pattern): The main decorative pattern worked on 4mm needles, featuring a trellis design with a stitch repeat divisible by 6 plus 2 stitches, plus 2 edge stitches. The pattern is worked from a chart showing right-side rows, with all wrong-side rows purled. The pattern repeats over rows 1–12 and is repeated 7 times across the width of the piece.

Materials and Gauge

The pattern calls for LANGYARNS MERINO 150 yarn, available in two options: LANGYARNS MERINO 150 DÉGRADÉ (extra fine merino, mulesing-free) in the blue-orange-brick colorway, or LANGYARNS MERINO 150 (fine merino, mulesing-free) in deep red. Each option requires 50 grams (1 ball).

Knitting needles required are ADDI needles in two sizes: 3.5mm (US 4) for the ribbed cuff and 4mm (US 6, UK 8) for the main patterned sections. The gauge for Pattern II worked on 4mm needles is 29 stitches and 38 rows per 10 cm (4") square, which is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions.

Construction Details

The wrist warmers are constructed by casting on 46 stitches using 3.5mm needles and working in ribbing (Pattern I) for 6 cm (2¼"). The needles are then changed to 4mm, and the knitter transitions to the trellis cable pattern (Pattern II), beginning at a marked arrow point and repeating the 6-stitch pattern across the width of the piece. This creates a sophisticated textured design that contrasts with the elastic ribbed cuff.
