What Is Being Made

The Lang PTO28-18 fingerless gloves are a children's knitting project designed in two sizes: Size 110 (for 5-year-olds) and Size 128 (for 8-year-olds). These gloves measure approximately 6x14 cm (2¼" x 5½") for the smaller size and 8x16 cm (3¼" x 6¼") for the larger size. The fingerless design provides warmth while allowing full finger mobility, making them practical for active children during cooler seasons.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs several key knitting techniques that build foundational skills:

• Bottom-up construction: The gloves are knitted from the cuff upward, starting with a cast-on at the wrist and working toward the hand opening
• Seamless, worked in the round: Using a set of double-pointed needles, the gloves are constructed circularly without seams, creating a smooth, professional finish

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

Half brioche rib is the primary stitch pattern used throughout the gloves. This textured stitch combines knit and purl stitches worked in a specific sequence:

• Round 2: Knit stitch followed by a purl stitch worked into the stitch below (*k1, p1 below*)
• These two rounds are repeated to create the brioche rib texture

Materials and Gauge

The gloves are knitted with LANGYARNS MERINO 150 DÉGRADÉ, an extra-fine merino wool that is mulesing-free, ensuring ethical production standards. The yarn features a dégradé (gradient) color effect, with two color combinations available: green-bordeaux-salmon and blau-orange-ziegel. Each size requires 50 grams (1 skein) of each color, for a total of 100 grams per pair.

Knitting needles required are a set of ADDI double-pointed needles in size 3.5mm (US 4). The gauge is 24 stitches and 50 rows per 10 cm (4") when working Pattern I on 3.5mm needles, which ensures proper fit and fabric density for the finished gloves.

Pattern Construction Details

The gloves begin with 16 stitches cast on and distributed evenly across four double-pointed needles. After approximately 3 cm (1¼") of half brioche rib, fully fashioned increases are worked every other row, adding 2 stitches on each needle a total of 14 times (Size 110) or 16 times (Size 128), resulting in 32 stitches per needle (Size 110) or 36 stitches per needle (Size 128). New stitches are incorporated into the established brioche rib pattern as soon as possible to maintain visual continuity.

The hand opening is created by casting off the first 29 stitches (Size 110) or 35 stitches (Size 128) on the first needle using a loose cast-off to allow comfortable hand passage. The sides are joined using a three-needle bind-off technique, which simultaneously knits together and casts off the stitches from needles 2 and 4. The remaining stitches are arranged back over four needles, and knitting continues with one additional increase worked between needles 4 and 1. After approximately 2 cm (Size 110) or 3 cm (Size 128) of additional pattern work, the remaining stitches are loosely cast off in pattern to complete the gloves.
