Lang PTO30-03 Triangular Shawl: Lace Knit Wrap

What is Being Made

The Lang PTO30-03 Triangular Shawl is a generously sized triangular wrap measuring approximately 33½ inches by 65 inches (85 by 165 centimeters). This shawl is designed as a versatile accessory suitable for draping over shoulders or wearing as a wrap, making it an elegant finishing piece for any wardrobe.

Craft and Construction Method

This shawl is created using the knitting craft. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, and is constructed using a top-down approach. The seamless construction means no seaming is required after completion, resulting in a smooth, continuous fabric from start to finish.

Techniques Used

The primary technique featured in this design is lace knitting, which creates an open, decorative fabric with intentional holes and eyelets. The lace pattern is worked according to a detailed chart that guides the placement of yarn overs and decreases to form the characteristic lace motifs. The pattern structure includes:

  • Rows 1–14 worked once as the foundation
  • Rows 15–30 repeated multiple times to build the body of the shawl
  • Rows 31–66 worked once to complete the design
  • A repeating unit of 8 stitches and 16 rows for the lace pattern

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The shawl employs several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Knit stitch (k) – the basic foundation stitch worked on right-side and wrong-side rows
  • Purl stitch (p) – used on wrong-side rows to maintain pattern continuity
  • Yarn over (yo) – creates the decorative openings characteristic of lace knitting
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease that balances yarn overs
  • Slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over (sl 1, k1, psso) – a left-leaning decrease used for shaping
  • Slip two stitches, knit one, pass slipped stitches over (sl 2 sts k-wise, k1, psso) – a double decrease for more pronounced shaping
  • Garter stitch (k1) – worked on right-side and wrong-side rows for edge definition
  • Edge stitches – one stitch worked at the beginning and end of each row to create neat selvage edges

On wrong-side rows, stitches are worked as they appear (knit the knits, purl the purls), and yarn overs are purled to maintain the lace pattern integrity.

Materials and Tools

The shawl is knitted using LANGYARNS FRIDA, a premium yarn composed of extra fine merino with superwash treatment and mulesing-free certification. A total of 400 grams of yarn is required, equivalent to 4 balls in the green-orange colorway (shade 1078.0005). The needles specified are ADDI knitting needles in US size 6 (4mm), which provide the appropriate gauge for working the lace pattern with this yarn weight.
