Lang PTO31-02 Sweater: Knitted Bottom-Up Design
Garment Overview
The Lang PTO31-02 is a classic pullover sweater crafted using the bottom-up construction method. This design features a structured fit available in two size ranges: Size S–M with a bust measurement of 46½ inches (118 cm) and Size L–XL with a bust measurement of 52¾ inches (134 cm). The sweater length measures 24 inches (61 cm) for Size S–M and 25½ inches (65 cm) for Size L–XL, making it a versatile everyday garment suitable for various body types and style preferences.
Construction Techniques
This sweater employs a seamed, worked-flat construction method for the majority of the garment, with strategic use of circular needles. The pattern begins by working the back and front pieces flat on straight needles, then uses a short circular needle for certain sections. The bottom-up approach means knitters begin at the cast-on edge and work upward toward the shoulders and neckline, allowing for easy length adjustments and a methodical building process. The design incorporates simultaneous shaping of shoulders and neckline, requiring careful attention to multiple decreases worked concurrently—a technique that adds sophistication to the final garment structure.
Stitch Patterns and Techniques
The Lang PTO31-02 features two primary stitch patterns that create visual interest and texture:
- Ribbed Stitch (Rib St): Worked on US 10 (6mm) needles using a 2x2 rib pattern (knit 2, purl 2). This stitch is used for the lower ribbing section, which measures 2¾ inches (7 cm) and provides elasticity and a finished appearance at the garment's hem. The rib stitch is worked flat with edge stitches (knit 1) on both sides for seaming purposes. When worked in the round, the rib stitch simplifies to every round: knit 2, purl 2, eliminating the need for edge stitches.
- Stockinette Stitch: Executed on US 10.5 (7mm) needles by knitting right-side rows and purling wrong-side rows when working flat. This smooth, classic stitch creates the main body fabric and showcases the yarn's texture and color.
Shaping and Armhole Placement
After the ribbed cuff section, the pattern transitions to the larger needles and incorporates strategic increases. Size S–M includes four separate increase rows distributed across the width (increases at positions k4, k9, k8, and k4), resulting in 78 total stitches. Size L–XL uses a different increase sequence with seven evenly spaced increases, yielding 88 stitches. These increases add width to the body before armhole shaping begins at 13 inches (33 cm) for Size S–M and 13¾ inches (35 cm) for Size L–XL. Armholes are marked at the beginning and end of a row, establishing the vertical measurement for sleeve cap depth.
Neckline Shaping
The neckline features a center-back opening with 22 stitches (Size S–M) or 24 stitches (Size L–XL) reserved for the neck opening, with 28 stitches (Size S–M) or 32 stitches (Size L–XL) remaining on each side for shoulder sections. This design allows for a comfortable, proportional neckline that frames the face while maintaining structural integrity through the shoulder area.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Lang PTO31-02 is designed to be knitted using LANGYARNS CLOUD, an extra-fine merino wool blend that includes nylon for durability and easy care. The yarn is mulesing-free, reflecting ethical production standards. Yardage requirements are 400 grams (4 balls) for Size S–M and 500 grams (5 balls) for Size L–XL, both in the colorway bright 1077.0008. This yarn weight and fiber content create a lightweight yet warm garment with excellent drape and breathability.
Needle Requirements
The pattern calls for ADDI brand knitting needles in two sizes: US 10 (6mm) needles for the ribbed sections and initial cast-on, and US 10.5 (7mm) needles for the main stockinette stitch body. A short circular needle in US 10 (6mm) is also required for specific
