What Is Being Made
The Lang PTO31-04 is a knitted scarf featuring intricate cable patterns. This design showcases the versatility of cable knitting techniques combined with textured stitch work, creating a sophisticated accessory suitable for various skill levels interested in exploring intermediate cable construction.
Construction Method
This scarf is worked flat on straight needles using a bottom-up construction approach. The seamless, flat-worked design means you begin at the cast-on edge and work continuously upward to the bind-off edge without requiring seaming, resulting in a polished, professional finish.
Cable Techniques and Stitches
The pattern employs multiple sophisticated cable crossing techniques to create dimensional texture:
- 2-over-2 right cable cross: Two stitches are placed on a cable needle and held to the back of the work, two stitches are knitted, then the held stitches are knitted to complete the cross
- 2-over-2 left cable cross: Two stitches are placed on a cable needle and held to the front of the work, two stitches are knitted, then the held stitches are knitted to complete the cross
- 6-stitch cable crosses with mixed knit and purl: Complex cable patterns that alternate between knit and purl stitches within the cable structure, creating visual interest and textural variation. These include right-leaning and left-leaning variations with different purl placement sequences
- Reverse cable crosses: Cables that cross in opposite directions to create symmetrical or contrasting visual effects
The stitch pattern also incorporates reverse stockinette (purl) stitches worked alongside the cables, allowing the raised cable texture to stand out prominently against a recessed background.
Materials
This pattern is designed to be worked with Lang Yarns yarn and appropriate knitting needles. The specific yarn weight and needle size recommendations are contained within the complete pattern documentation available through Lang Yarns' pattern shop.
Pattern Details
The pattern includes a charted stitch diagram spanning 66 stitches in width, with row-by-row instructions provided in multiple languages including German, French, and Dutch. The chart format allows knitters to visualize the cable placement and stitch relationships throughout the design, making it easier to maintain pattern consistency across the length of the scarf.
