Lang PTO33-02 Snowflake Stole

What is Being Made

The Lang PTO33-02 Snowflake Stole is a rectangular knitted wrap designed as a versatile accessory. The finished dimensions are approximately 23½ inches wide by 62½ inches long (60 x 159 cm), making it suitable for draping across the shoulders or wearing as a generous scarf. This stole combines elegant construction with practical sizing for everyday wear.

Techniques Used

This knitting project is worked flat on straight needles in a seamless construction method. The stole begins with a cast-on of 71 stitches and is worked in rows from one end to the other, creating a continuous fabric without seaming. The pattern employs a straightforward approach, repeating the same two-row pattern sequence throughout the entire length of the piece. Finishing techniques include crochet edging applied around all four sides of the completed knitted fabric, followed by a second round of crochet slip stitches to create a refined border. The pattern concludes with weaving in loose ends and optional blocking to achieve the desired final shape and drape.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern is Half Brioche Rib, which creates a textured, elastic fabric with excellent recovery and visual interest. This stitch combines knit and purl stitches with yarn overs and slipped stitches to produce the characteristic brioche effect. The Half Brioche Rib pattern is worked over two rows:

  • Row 1 (Wrong Side): Knit one edge stitch, then alternate slipped stitches with yarn overs (worked purl-wise) and knit stitches across the row, ending with a knit edge stitch
  • Row 2 (Right Side): Knit one edge stitch, then alternate brioche knit stitches (combining the slipped stitch and yarn over from the previous row) with purl stitches, ending with a brioche knit and knit edge stitch

These two rows are repeated continuously to build the fabric. The finishing incorporates single crochet stitches applied around all edges, followed by slip stitches worked into every other single crochet stitch to create a polished, finished edge.

Materials

The stole requires 450 grams of yarn, equivalent to 9 balls of Lang Yarns Snowflake in the sage colorway (1072.0092). Snowflake is a premium blend fiber composed of Pima cotton, baby alpaca, nylon, and extra fine merino wool, offering a soft, breathable, and durable fabric suitable for year-round wear. The project calls for ADDI brand knitting needles in size US 13 (9mm) for the main knitting, and one crochet hook in size US K-10.5 (7mm) for the finishing edging. The recommended gauge for Half Brioche Rib on US 13 needles is 12 stitches and 27 rows per 4 inches (10 cm).
