Product Description

Lang PTO33-06 Cardigan is a simple yet stunning women’s sweater featuring dropped shoulders, v-neck knit in Snowflake, a yarn that does all the work. The sweater is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed. The neckband stitches are picked up from the lower edge to v-neck and down to the lower edge and worked back and forth in a k1, p1 rib stitch pattern. Snowflake by Lang Yarns has the same fluffy and light texture as a real snowflake! This yarn uses a special spinning process to make the fun and unique color patterning.

Lang PTO33-06 Cardigan

What is Being Made

The Lang PTO33-06 is a knitted cardigan featuring a snowflake design, available in four sizes ranging from Small to Extra Large. This garment is designed as a classic button-front cardigan with a finished bust measurement of 42½/45¾/48¾/52 inches (108/116/124/132 cm) and a length of 19¾/20/20½/20¾ inches (50/51/52/53 cm). The cardigan is constructed with separate front and back pieces that are seamed together, creating a structured, tailored fit suitable for layering or wearing as a standalone piece.

Techniques Used

This cardigan employs a bottom-up construction method, meaning the garment is knitted starting from the lower edge and working upward toward the shoulders. The pattern utilizes both flat knitting and worked-in-the-round techniques, with pieces worked flat on straight needles and then seamed together to create the finished garment. This combination of techniques allows for precise shaping and the integration of the snowflake design throughout the piece.

The construction begins with ribbed edging worked in a smaller needle size to create elasticity and definition at the lower edge. The garment then transitions to a larger needle size for the main body, worked in Stockinette Stitch. Strategic increases are incorporated on the first row of the larger needles for sizes Large and Extra Large to achieve proper proportions. Neck shaping is accomplished through decreases worked every sixth row, creating a gradual, professional-looking neckline. Shoulder shaping is achieved through bind-off decreases at the beginning of right-side rows, allowing for proper sleeve cap integration.

Stitches Used

  • Ribbed Stitch: Used for the initial 2¾ inches (7 cm) of the lower edge, created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a 1x1 pattern. This elastic ribbing provides structure and prevents curling at the hem.
  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch used for the main body of the cardigan, created by alternating rows of knit stitches on the right side and purl stitches on the wrong side. This classic stitch creates a smooth, flat fabric ideal for displaying the snowflake pattern.
  • Slip, Knit, Pass Slipped Stitch Over (sl 1, k1, psso): Used for left-leaning decreases during neck shaping on the left front piece, creating a refined edge detail.
  • Knit Two Together (k2tog): Used for right-leaning decreases during neck shaping on the right front piece, providing balanced shaping.
  • Bind Off: Used to secure stitches at the shoulders in multiple stages, creating clean, finished edges.

Materials

The Lang PTO33-06 Cardigan is designed to be knitted with LANGYARNS SNOWFLAKE yarn, a premium blend fiber containing Pima cotton, baby alpaca, nylon, and extra fine merino. This sophisticated fiber composition creates a garment with excellent drape, breathability, and softness. Yardage requirements vary by size: Small requires 350 grams (7 balls), Medium requires 400 grams (8 balls), Large requires 450 grams (9 balls), and Extra Large requires 500 grams (10 balls).

The pattern specifies the use of two needle sizes: smaller needles for the ribbed edging and larger needles for the main body in Stockinette Stitch. The transition between needle sizes creates the necessary gauge changes to achieve proper fit and drape. The specific needle sizes are indicated in the pattern schematic, which provides detailed measurements in centimeters for all garment components across all four sizes.
