Lang PTO43-01 Bergen Sweater

What is Being Made

The Lang PTO43-01 Bergen is a knitted sweater designed by Lang Yarns. This pullover-style garment features prominent cable stitch detailing and is available in multiple sizes to accommodate different body measurements. The sweater is constructed using a structured approach that combines both flat knitting and circular knitting techniques, making it suitable for knitters with intermediate to advanced skills.

Construction Method

This sweater is worked using a bottom-up construction, meaning the knitter begins at the lower edge and works upward toward the neckline. The garment is worked flat for most sections, requiring pieces to be seamed together to create the finished sweater. Certain sections, particularly the body, may also incorporate circular knitting techniques to streamline construction and minimize seaming where possible.

Stitches and Techniques

The Bergen sweater prominently features cable stitches as its primary decorative element. These cables are created using cable needles to cross groups of stitches over one another, producing the characteristic twisted, rope-like texture that defines the sweater's visual interest. The pattern utilizes a 20-stitch repeat for the cable motifs, allowing for consistent patterning across the body and sleeves.

Cable techniques employed include:

  • Cables worked by placing stitches on a cable needle behind the work, knitting the following stitches, then knitting the held stitches
  • Cables worked by placing stitches on a cable needle in front of the work, knitting the following stitches, then knitting the held stitches
  • Twisted stitches for textural variation
  • Reverse stockinette stitch as a background to highlight the cable definition

Sizing and Fit

The pattern provides multiple size options with finished measurements in centimeters. Chest measurements range from approximately 54 to 66 cm depending on the chosen size, with corresponding sleeve lengths and body lengths provided to ensure proper fit across different body types.

Materials

This pattern is designed to be worked with yarn and needles appropriate to the Lang Yarns specifications. Knitters will require knitting needles in the size recommended for their chosen yarn weight, as well as cable needles for executing the cable stitch techniques. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF document from the Lang Yarns pattern shop, making it accessible for digital reference during the knitting process.
