Lang PTO44-04 Men's Cardigan

What Is Being Made

This is a men's cardigan knitted using the Lang Yarns Frida pattern (PTO-044_04). The cardigan is designed with a classic button-front construction and features decorative cable pattern details throughout the garment. The pattern provides multiple size options to accommodate different fit preferences.

Construction Method

The cardigan is worked flat on straight needles using a bottom-up construction technique. This means the knitter begins at the lower edge of the garment and works upward toward the shoulders and neckline. The individual pieces—front panels, back panel, and sleeves—are seamed together after completion, creating a finished, tailored appearance typical of traditional cardigan construction.

Cable Techniques and Stitches

The pattern incorporates cable stitches as a primary design element. The cables are created using the following techniques:

  • 2-stitch cable crosses: Stitches are placed on a cable needle and held at the back of the work while the next 2 stitches are knitted, then the held stitches are knitted from the cable needle. This creates a twisted, rope-like texture.
  • 3-stitch cable crosses: A more substantial cable variation where 3 stitches are placed on a cable needle, held at the back of the work, 3 stitches are knitted, and then the held stitches are knitted from the cable needle.
  • Knit and purl stitches: The pattern uses standard knit stitches (working yarn through the front of the stitch) and purl stitches (working yarn through the back of the stitch) to create texture and definition.

Pattern Repeats and Gauge

The cable design is organized into repeating pattern sections. The primary pattern repeat consists of 10 stitches across 10 rows for the cable motif, with a larger 25-stitch repeat used for additional pattern sections. Understanding gauge is essential for this project—the pattern provides specific measurements in centimeters for all sizes, ensuring proper fit across the chest, length, and sleeve dimensions.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

This pattern is designed to be worked with yarn in appropriate weight for a men's cardigan, though specific yarn weight recommendations are referenced in the complete pattern documentation. The garment is constructed on knitting needles suitable for the chosen yarn, with the flat construction method requiring straight needles or the flat method on circular needles. The seamed construction indicates that careful attention to edge stitches and finishing techniques will be important for a professional result.

Sizing and Fit

The pattern provides multiple size options with metric measurements provided for all dimensions. Chest widths range from approximately 46 to 66 centimeters depending on the size selected, with corresponding adjustments to body length, sleeve length, and other key measurements. This allows knitters to customize the fit based on the intended wearer's measurements.
