Lang PTO45-05 Sweater Pattern Summary

Garment Overview

The Lang PTO45-05 is a knitted sweater designed in a bottom-up construction method, featuring a classic pullover silhouette. This pattern is available in sizes S–M and L–XL, with finished bust measurements of 44 inches (112 cm) and 52 inches (132 cm) respectively. The total length of the finished garment measures 29¼ inches (74 cm), creating a comfortable, standard-length sweater suitable for everyday wear.

Construction Techniques

This sweater employs a bottom-up seamed construction, meaning the body and sleeves are knitted separately starting from the lower edges and working upward, then assembled together using seaming. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, with the exception of the neckline finishing which utilizes a short circular needle. This traditional approach allows for straightforward shaping and provides clear row-by-row progression throughout the pattern.

The sweater incorporates strategic shaping at the shoulders and neckline. The neck edge features bind-off decreases worked smoothly to create a refined finish, with 2 stitches bound off at the initial neck edge, followed by single-stitch decreases over subsequent rows. Shoulder shaping is executed symmetrically on both front pieces to match the back shoulder construction.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Lang PTO45-05 features two primary stitch patterns:

  • Rib Stitch (K1:P1) – An alternating knit and purl pattern worked over an even number of stitches. This elastic stitch is used for the ribbed cuffs and welts, providing stretch and recovery. The ribbing is worked for 2 inches (5 cm) on the sleeves using US 10 (6mm) needles, creating a fitted edge that hugs the wrist.
  • Drop Stitch Pattern – The primary decorative stitch for the main body of the sweater. This pattern is created by alternating between US 10 (6mm) and US 10.5 (7mm) needles on successive rows, which produces the characteristic dropped-stitch texture. The drop stitch pattern includes decreases worked as knit-two-together (k2tog) stitches, strategically placed to shape the garment while maintaining the visual interest of the stitch pattern.

The decrease row for the drop stitch pattern is worked on the right side using the smaller US 10 (6mm) needles and incorporates k2tog decreases spaced throughout the row, with varying stitch counts depending on the size being knitted (either k2 or k1 between decreases). Edge stitches are maintained at both ends of the row for seaming purposes.

Materials and Tools

The Lang PTO45-05 pattern calls for LANGYARNS CLOUD yarn, a premium blend of virgin wool and nylon. The fiber content includes merino extrafine wool that is superwash-treated and mulesing-free, combined with nylon for durability and easy care. Yardage requirements are 300 grams (approximately 3 balls) for sizes S–M and 400 grams (approximately 4 balls) for sizes L–XL, in the colorway violet-orange-green 1077.0010.

The pattern requires the following needles: ADDI knitting needles in US 10 (6mm) and US 10.5 (7mm) sizes for the main fabric work, and one short circular knitting needle in US 10 (6mm) for finishing the neckline. The needle size alternation between 6mm and 7mm is integral to creating the drop stitch pattern texture throughout the sweater body.

Pattern Structure

The sweater is constructed in separate pieces: a back panel, two front panels, and two sleeves. The back and front pieces are worked flat from the cast-on edge upward, with the front pieces incorporating neck shaping that occurs before the final shoulder shaping. The sleeves begin with a ribbed cuff and transition into the drop stitch pattern with integrated decreases to create sleeve cap shaping. Once all pieces are complete, they are seamed together at the side seams and armholes, with the neckline finished using the circular needle.
