Lang PTO45-07 Cardigan in Langyarns Cloud
Garment Overview
The Lang PTO45-07 is a classic knitted cardigan designed for intermediate to advanced knitters. This seamed, bottom-up construction cardigan features elegant shaping through the body and sleeves, with finished bust measurements of 52" or 58¼" (132 or 148 cm) and a total length of 37¾" (96 cm). The cardigan is worked flat on straight needles in separate pieces—back, left front, right front, and sleeves—then seamed together for a polished, tailored appearance.
Construction Technique
This cardigan employs a bottom-up, worked-flat construction method, meaning each piece is knitted from the lower edge upward and assembled through seaming. This approach allows for easy fitting adjustments and provides excellent stitch definition. The pattern includes detailed shaping instructions for armholes and shoulders, with increases worked at the beginning of right-side rows for the left front and at the end of right-side rows for the right front, creating a balanced, symmetrical garment. Shoulder shaping is accomplished through strategic bind-offs at specified intervals, ensuring proper fit and drape across the shoulders.
Stitch Patterns and Techniques
- Rib Stitch: An alternating knit-one, purl-one (K1P1) rib worked on US 10.5 (7mm) needles, used for the cuff and hem edges. This elastic stitch creates a fitted, stretchy border that hugs the body and prevents rolling.
- Drop Stitch Pattern: The primary fabric pattern uses a sophisticated drop stitch technique worked across two needle sizes—US 10 (6mm) and US 10.5 (7mm)—alternating between rows. The pattern incorporates yarn-overs and purl stitches to create an open, textured fabric with visual interest and subtle drape. This technique requires careful attention to needle size changes with each row to achieve the intended effect.
Yarn and Materials
The cardigan is designed to be knitted with Langyarns Cloud, a premium yarn blend consisting of virgin wool (merino extrafine, super-wash, mulesing-free) and nylon. This fiber composition provides durability, softness, and easy care through machine washing. The pattern calls for 400 grams (4 balls) of Langyarns Cloud in the colorway violet-green-blue (reference number 1077.0009). The nylon content adds resilience and helps the cardigan maintain its shape through regular wear and washing.
Needles and Tools
The pattern specifies ADDI knitting needles in two sizes: US 10 (6mm) and US 10.5 (7mm). The larger needles (7mm) are used for the ribbed cuff and hem, while both sizes work in tandem for the drop stitch pattern sections. This dual-needle approach is integral to achieving the correct gauge and fabric texture.
Sizing and Fit
The Lang PTO45-07 is offered in two size ranges: Size S–M and Size L–XL. Each size includes specific stitch counts and shaping instructions. For example, shoulder bind-offs differ between sizes, with S–M requiring 5 stitches bound off 6 times, while L–XL uses 5 stitches 3 times followed by 6 stitches 3 times. All measurements in the pattern are provided in metric centimeters as well as inches for international knitters.
Skill Level and Pattern Complexity
This cardigan is suitable for knitters with intermediate to advanced experience. The drop stitch pattern requires consistent attention to needle size changes and yarn-over placement, while the seaming and shaping instructions demand precision. The worked-flat construction makes it more manageable than circular knitting for some knitters, though careful attention to symmetrical shaping on the front pieces is essential for a professional finish.
