Lang Mittens – Ladies' Knitted Mittens

What Is Being Made

These are classic ladies' mittens crafted using the Lang Yarns Cloud yarn. The mittens are designed in a seamless, worked-in-the-round construction that creates a polished, professional finish. Each mitten features a ribbed cuff for a secure fit at the wrist, a shaped thumb gusset for comfortable hand coverage, and a tapered crown with strategic decreases that close the top smoothly.

Knitting Techniques

The mittens are constructed using several key knitting techniques:

  • Bottom-up construction: Work begins at the cuff and progresses upward toward the fingertips, allowing for easy length adjustments during the knitting process.
  • Seamless, worked-in-the-round: Using a set of double-pointed needles, the entire mitten is knitted circularly without seaming, creating a continuous tube from cast-on to crown closure.
  • Thumb gusset shaping: Strategic increases (M1 make-one stitches) create an expandable section for the thumb, ensuring proper fit and mobility.
  • Crown decreases: Paired decreases using slip-stitch and knit-together techniques gradually reduce stitches, creating a neat, tapered finish at the top of the mitten.

Stitches Used

The pattern employs two primary stitch patterns:

  • Ribbed stitch (K2:P2): A two-by-two knit-purl rib worked on US 10 (6mm) needles creates the textured, elastic cuff that measures 4 inches in length. This rib provides stretch and recovery for a snug wrist fit.
  • Stockinette stitch: Worked on US 10.5 (7mm) needles, stockinette (knitting all stitches in the round) forms the smooth body of the mitten. This classic stitch creates a refined, flat fabric ideal for everyday wear.

Materials and Gauge

Yarn: One 100-gram ball of Lang Yarns Cloud is required. This yarn is composed of virgin wool (merino extrafine, superwash, mulesing-free) blended with nylon for durability and easy care. The yarn is available in eight color variants: brass/light blue/olive (1077.0001), blue (1077.0002), rose (1077.0003), green (1077.0004), bordeaux-green-blue (1077.0005), lilac-pink-ochre (1077.0006), bordeaux (1077.0007), and bright (1077.0008).

Needles: A set of double-pointed needles in two sizes is required: US 10 (6mm) for the ribbed cuff and US 10.5 (7mm) for the stockinette body.

Gauge: 13 stitches and 19 rows measure 4 inches (10 centimeters) over stockinette stitch on US 10.5 (7mm) needles. Maintaining this gauge is essential for proper fit.

Pattern Overview

The mitten begins with 24 cast-on stitches arranged evenly on double-pointed needles and worked in the round with a stitch marker placed at the beginning. After completing the 4-inch ribbed cuff, the needles are changed to the larger size and stockinette stitch begins. The thumb gusset is shaped through strategic increases worked over several rounds, expanding the stitch count to 28 stitches. When the mitten reaches 5 inches from the cast-on edge, 6 stitches are placed on a holder for later thumb completion, and 2 new stitches are cast on to maintain the working circumference at 24 stitches. The main body continues in stockinette until the mitten reaches 9 inches total length. The crown is then shaped through a series of paired decreases worked over six rounds, progressively reducing the stitch count from 20 to 16 to 12 to 8 stitches, at which point the yarn is broken and the remaining stitches are closed.
