Lang PTO46-01 Frida Sweater
What is Being Made
The Lang PTO46-01 Frida is a knitted sweater designed in four sizes: Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large. The finished garment features a classic V-neck construction with bust measurements ranging from 46½" to 53½" (118 to 136 cm) and a length of approximately 20" to 21¼" (51 to 54 cm). This is a versatile pullover-style sweater suitable for everyday wear.
Construction Techniques
The Frida sweater is constructed using a bottom-up seamed method, meaning the pieces are knitted from the lower edge upward and then assembled together. The pattern employs both flat knitting and circular knitting techniques. The body and sleeves are primarily worked flat on straight needles, while finishing details such as ribbing at the neckline are worked in the round using a short circular needle. This hybrid approach combines the ease of flat construction for shaping with the seamless finish of circular knitting where appropriate.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern featured in this design is rib stitch, which provides elasticity and a refined finish, particularly at the cuffs, hem, and neckline. The main fabric appears to be worked in stockinette stitch (knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows), which creates a smooth, classic sweater fabric. Shaping is achieved through strategic decreases, particularly for the V-neck shaping where purl two together (p2tog) decreases are worked at regular intervals on right-side rows. The pattern uses a 25-stitch repeat for the main pattern repeat, allowing for consistent texture and design across the garment.
Shaping Details
The sweater features a distinctive V-neck design that is shaped symmetrically on both front sides. When the front piece reaches 14½" to 15" (37 to 38 cm) in length, the work is divided at the center, and each side is finished separately. Decreases for the V-neck are worked every right-side row for 16 to 19 times depending on size, creating a gradual, flattering neckline. Shoulder shaping is worked to match the back piece length, ensuring proper fit and proportion.
Materials and Tools
This pattern calls for LANGYARNS Frida yarn, a merino extrafine fiber that is mulesing-free, making it an ethical choice for conscious crafters. The yardage requirements are 500 grams (approximately 5 balls) for sizes Small and Medium, and 600 grams (approximately 6 balls) for sizes Large and Extra Large, in the colorway orange-green (1078.0002). The pattern specifies ADDI brand knitting needles in two sizes: US 4 (3.5mm) for ribbing and finer details, and US 6 (4mm) for the main fabric. A short circular needle in size US 4 (3.5mm) is also required for finishing the neckline ribbing.
Yarn Characteristics
The Frida yarn is composed of merino extrafine fiber, a premium natural wool known for its softness, breathability, and temperature-regulating properties. The mulesing-free designation indicates that the wool has been sourced ethically without the use of mulesing practices, appealing to environmentally and socially conscious makers. This yarn weight and fiber content are ideal for creating a refined, wearable sweater with excellent drape and comfort.
