Lang PTO47-02 Snowflake Cardigan
Garment Overview
The Lang PTO47-02 Snowflake Cardigan is a knitted cardigan designed by Lang Yarns, available in four sizes ranging from Small to Extra Large. This bottom-up seamed cardigan features a classic construction with bust measurements of 42½", 45¾", 48¾", and 52" (108, 116, 124, and 132 cm respectively), and a finished length of 24½" (62 cm). The cardigan is worked flat on straight needles and seamed together upon completion.
Construction Technique
This cardigan is constructed using the bottom-up method, meaning pieces are knitted from the cast-on edge upward and then seamed together to form the finished garment. The pattern is worked flat rather than in the round, allowing knitters to work back and forth on straight needles. This approach is ideal for creating structured cardigans with defined front closures and precise shaping.
Stitches and Pattern Details
The Snowflake Cardigan employs a combination of fundamental knitting stitches to create texture and structure:
- Stockinette Stitch: Forms the main fabric of the cardigan body, creating a smooth, classic knit surface
- K2:P2 Ribbing: Used for the initial ribbed cuff sections, providing elasticity and a fitted edge
- K1:P1 Ribbing: Applied to the closing band (button band or front edge), offering a refined finish and structural support
The pattern includes a 25-stitch repeat motif, which is repeated across the garment width. Shaping occurs through strategic increases and decreases: Size Small includes 1 stitch increase, Size Large includes 1 stitch decrease, and Size Extra Large includes 2 stitch decreases when transitioning from ribbing to the main pattern.
Pocket Construction
The cardigan features functional pockets with an inner pocket lining. When the front piece measures 8¼" (21 cm) in length, stitches are bound off to create the upper pocket opening. The pocket opening dimensions vary by size (stitches 12–29 for Small, 13–30 for Medium, 15–32 for Large, and 16–33 for Extra Large). An inner pocket is then worked on the wrong side by picking up 18 stitches from the first row of ribbing and continuing in Stockinette stitch.
Needles and Materials
The pattern calls for ADDI knitting needles in two sizes: US 10.5 (7mm) for the ribbed cuff sections and US 11 (8mm) for the main body. This needle size progression is a common technique to ensure proper gauge and fabric consistency.
The recommended yarn is Lang Yarns Snowflake, a premium blend fiber containing Pima cotton, baby alpaca, nylon, and extrafine merino wool. Yardage requirements vary by size: 400g (8 balls) for Sizes Small and Medium, 450g (9 balls) for Large, and 500g (10 balls) for Extra Large. The yarn is available in sage colorway (product code 1072.0092).
Yarn Fiber Composition Benefits
The Snowflake yarn's fiber blend is specifically engineered for comfort and durability. The Pima cotton provides breathability and a soft hand, baby alpaca contributes warmth and luxury, nylon adds durability and elasticity, and extrafine merino wool offers temperature regulation and resilience. This combination creates a versatile cardigan suitable for transitional seasons.
