Lang PTO47-03 Snowflake Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Lang PTO47-03 is a knitted sweater featuring a snowflake pattern design. This pullover garment is available in multiple sizes ranging from Small to Extra Large, with finished bust measurements of 38½" to 44" (98 to 112 cm) and a finished length of 23½" (60 cm). The sweater is constructed as a classic pullover with set-in sleeves and a V-neckline.

Construction Techniques

This sweater is worked flat on straight needles and seamed together, rather than being worked in the round as a single piece. The pattern involves working the back and front pieces separately, then joining them at the shoulders and sides. The V-neckline is shaped by binding off the center front stitch and finishing each side separately with strategic decreases worked on right-side rows. The decreases are accomplished using k2tog (knit two together) on the left side and slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over (sl1, k1, psso) on the right side to create a balanced V-neck shaping.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern is knit one, purl one (K1:P1) ribbing, which creates vertical columns of texture. The ribbing is worked over an odd number of stitches, with Row 1 (right side) beginning with knit one and alternating knit and purl stitches to the last stitch, which is knit. Row 2 (wrong side) begins with purl one and alternates accordingly. The snowflake motif is worked using a charted pattern with a 25-stitch by 25-row repeat. The chart uses standard knitting symbols indicating knit stitches, purl stitches, and various decrease techniques to create the snowflake design across the garment.

Materials and Tools

The sweater is knitted using Lang Yarns Snowflake, a blend of cotton, baby alpaca, nylon, and merino extrafine. The yardage requirement is 400 to 450 grams, equivalent to 8 to 9 balls in the colorway Sky (1072.0020). Three different needle sizes are used throughout construction: US 10.5 (7mm), US 11 (8mm), and US 13 (9mm) ADDI knitting needles. The ribbed cuffs and neckband are worked on the smaller US 10.5 (7mm) needles to create a snug, elastic finish, while the main body is worked on the larger needles to achieve the correct gauge for the snowflake pattern. A short circular needle in US 10.5 (7mm) is also required for finishing the neckline.

Pattern Details

  • Back piece worked flat with ribbed cuff and main snowflake pattern
  • Front piece mirrors back construction but begins ribbing with purl one instead of knit one for a reversed appearance
  • V-neck shaping begins when the front measures 18" for sizes S–M or 17¾" (45–46 cm) for sizes L–XL
  • Neck decreases are repeated every right-side row for 12 to 13 rows depending on size
  • Shoulder bind-offs match the back piece construction
  • Seaming joins the front and back at side seams and shoulder seams
