Lang PTO51-07 Cardigan

What is Being Made

The Lang PTO51-07 is a knitted cardigan available in four sizes: S, M, L, and XL. This garment features a classic cardigan construction with front button closures and is designed to be worked from the bottom up using flat knitting techniques. The pattern includes detailed schematic measurements in centimeters for all size variations, allowing for precise fit across the chest, length, sleeve width, and armhole depth.

Construction Techniques

This cardigan is constructed using bottom-up seamed construction, meaning the pieces are knitted separately starting from the lower edges and then sewn together. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, which allows for easier shaping and stitch manipulation across the front and back panels.

The pattern employs bind-off shaping at the neck and shoulder areas to create the proper armhole and neckline depth. The instructions detail a graduated bind-off sequence at the neck edge, binding off 3 stitches, then 2 stitches, and finally 1 stitch in a staggered pattern across multiple rows. This technique creates a smooth, professional-looking curved neckline. Shoulder shaping is accomplished through bind-offs worked at the beginning of rows, with different stitch counts specified for each size.

Stitches Used

The Lang PTO51-07 cardigan incorporates several fundamental knitting stitches:

  • Garter Stitch: Worked by knitting every row on both the right side and wrong side, creating a textured, reversible fabric. This stitch is used on the front and back sections of the cardigan.
  • Ribbed Stitch: A combination of knit and purl stitches that creates vertical columns of texture. Ribbing is commonly used for cuffs, waistbands, and neckbands to provide elasticity and a finished appearance.
  • Slipped Stitch Edging: The pattern uses slipped stitches worked with the yarn held at the back or front of the work to create clean, chain-like selvage edges. On right-side rows, stitches are slipped purlwise with yarn held behind the work; on wrong-side rows, stitches are slipped purlwise with yarn held in front of the work. This technique provides neat side seams when pieces are sewn together.

Materials

The pattern is designed to be worked with Lang Yarns yarn and requires appropriate needles for the chosen yarn weight. While specific yarn fiber content and needle size are detailed in the complete pattern document, the schematic measurements and gauge information provided allow knitters to select suitable materials that will produce the intended garment dimensions. All measurements in the pattern are given in metric centimeters (cm) for precision and international compatibility.

Pattern Details

The pattern includes comprehensive schematics with measurements for all four sizes, showing the finished width across the bust, total length, sleeve length, cap height, and other critical dimensions. The gauge information indicates how many stitches and rows per centimeter should be achieved with the recommended yarn and needles, which is essential for ensuring the finished garment matches the intended size. The pattern is presented in multiple languages, reflecting Lang Yarns' international distribution, and is available as a downloadable PDF from the Lang Yarns pattern shop.
