Lang PTO51-08 Poncho: Knitted Lace Cape with Seamed Construction

What is Being Made

The Lang PTO51-08 Poncho is a knitted cape-style garment designed in two size options: Size S–M with a top width of 23½ inches (60 cm) and length of 20½ inches (52 cm), and Size L–XL with a top width of 26¾ inches (68 cm) and length of 23½ inches (60 cm). This poncho offers a versatile layering piece suitable for various occasions and seasons, with a structured silhouette that drapes elegantly from the shoulders.

Techniques Used

This poncho is constructed using several key knitting techniques that create both visual interest and structural integrity. The garment is worked flat, meaning it is knitted on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for easier pattern management and shaping. The construction employs seaming to join sections together, creating clean finished edges and precise garment assembly. The most prominent design feature is the incorporation of lace patterning throughout the piece, which creates openwork motifs that add elegance and visual texture to the finished garment.

The lace pattern is achieved through the strategic use of yarn overs and decreases worked in specific sequences. The pattern instructions include detailed stitch abbreviations for various decrease techniques, including knit two together (k2tog) on right-side rows and purl two together (p2tog) on wrong-side rows, as well as slip-stitch decreases (sl1, k1, psso) for directional shaping. These decreases are paired with yarn overs (yo) to create the characteristic openwork holes that define lace knitting.

Stitches Used

The Lang PTO51-08 Poncho pattern utilizes a range of fundamental and decorative knitting stitches. The base construction incorporates stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric by alternating knit stitches on right-side rows with purl stitches on wrong-side rows. This provides a stable foundation for the lace elements.

The lace sections are created through the combination of:

  • Yarn overs (yo) – deliberate increases that create the openwork holes characteristic of lace knitting
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used on right-side rows
  • Purl two together (p2tog) – the corresponding decrease for wrong-side rows
  • Slip-stitch decrease (sl1, k1, psso) – a left-leaning decrease that provides directional shaping in lace motifs
  • Twisted decreases – variations that add textural complexity to the lace pattern

The pattern also includes a folding edge detail, which is a finished edge technique that creates a neat, professional border. This edge treatment involves specific stitch manipulations to ensure the poncho's perimeter is both durable and visually polished.

Materials

The Lang PTO51-08 Poncho is designed to be knitted with LANGYARNS TROP yarn. While the complete yardage requirements are not fully detailed in the provided documentation, the pattern specifies that all measurements are provided in metric centimeters (cm), indicating a professionally scaled design. Knitters will require appropriate needles for the yarn weight specified by LANGYARNS TROP, and the seamed construction method means that a tapestry needle or yarn needle will be necessary for joining the flat-worked sections together during finishing.

This pattern is available as a downloadable PDF from the Lang Yarns pattern shop, making it accessible for knitters who prefer digital pattern formats. The pattern is produced by LANG & Co. AG of Reiden, Switzerland, and includes multilingual instructions to serve the international knitting community.
