Lopi Dista Knitted Sweater

What is Being Made

The Lopi Dista is a knitted sweater designed in three sizes: S, M, and L. The garment features a chest measurement of 86 cm (size S), 100 cm (size M), and 114 cm (size L), with a total length of 44–46 cm depending on size. The sweater is worked seamlessly from the bottom up, with sleeves knitted in the round and joined to the body.

Construction Techniques

This sweater employs several advanced knitting techniques to create a cohesive, professional finish:

  • Bottom-up construction: The body is begun at the lower edge and worked upward, allowing for easy fitting adjustments during the knitting process.
  • Seamless, worked in the round: The body and sleeves are knitted circularly using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, continuous fabric.
  • Stranded colorwork: The design incorporates stranded knitting (also called Fair Isle), where multiple colors are carried across the row to create intricate patterned charts. This technique requires careful tension management to keep floats even and prevent puckering.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Lopi Dista is primarily worked in stockinette stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for displaying colorwork patterns. The garment features three detailed stitch charts that guide the stranded color placement throughout the design. Chart 1 establishes the foundational pattern for the body and sleeves, while Charts 2 and 3 provide additional patterning detail. The charts indicate stitch counts at various rounds, ranging from 64 stitches at the beginning to 240 stitches at the widest point, depending on size selection.

Materials and Gauge

The Lopi Dista is designed to be knitted with Álafosslopi yarn, a traditional Icelandic wool available in 100-gram balls. The color palette includes six shades: light ash heather (color A), black heather (color B), ash heather (color C), white (color D), grey heather (color E), and dark grey heather (color F). Yardage requirements vary by size, with quantities ranging from 1 to 6 balls depending on the chosen color and garment size.

Two needle sizes are required: 4½mm (US 7) circular needles in both 40 cm and 80 cm lengths for ribbing and initial setup, and 5½mm (US 9) circular needles in matching lengths for the main body. Double-pointed needles in sizes 4½mm (US 7) and 5½mm (US 10) are also specified for sleeve work. The recommended gauge is 23 stitches and 18 rows over 10 × 10 cm in stockinette stitch using 5½mm needles. Knitters should always check gauge and adjust needle size as necessary to achieve proper fit and fabric drape.

The sleeve length to underarm is 51–53 cm depending on size, providing a standard fit for most body proportions.
