Lopi Gleði Cardigan: Pattern Summary
What Is Being Made
The Lopi Gleði is a feminine cardigan knitted in a cheerful golden yellow colorway, inspired by the Icelandic word "gleði" meaning happiness. This design offers a modern take on the traditional pattern Kátir karlar (Happy Men), featuring soft shaping through strategic decreases and increases. The cardigan is available in six sizes ranging from XS to XXL, making it accessible for various body types and preferences.
Construction Method and Techniques
This cardigan is constructed using a bottom-up, seamless, worked-in-the-round approach, which minimizes seaming and creates a smooth, continuous fabric. The yoke is worked using the stranded colorwork technique, allowing for intricate patterning while maintaining the integrity of the knit. The pattern employs a two-color stranded design that creates visual interest without requiring complex shaping.
The cardigan begins at the lower body and progresses upward, with the body and sleeves joined together at the yoke using a circular needle. This seamless construction method reduces finishing time and creates a more polished final garment. The use of shorter and longer circular needles accommodates the transition from working flat sections to working in the round.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch used throughout this cardigan is stockinette stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance on the right side and bumpy texture on the wrong side. The pattern incorporates soft decreases and increases that shape the garment gracefully without creating harsh lines or visible shaping details.
The neckband is worked with single ply yarn for a refined, delicate finish. The hem sections on the body, sleeves, and neckband are created by folding stockinette stitch, which provides a professional edge and prevents curling. The pattern includes specific instructions for working back and forth on circular needles during the neckband construction, demonstrating versatility in needle technique.
Colorwork and Design Details
The Gleði features a three-color palette using Plötulopi yarn: ash (color A), white (color B), and golden yellow (color C). The stranded colorwork is worked according to a provided chart, allowing knitters to follow a visual representation of the pattern. The golden yellow serves as the dominant color, creating a summery aesthetic that evokes warmth and sunshine.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern calls for Plötulopi yarn, an Icelandic wool yarn known for its distinctive texture and traditional heritage. The yarn quantities vary by size, with requirements ranging from 100g plates of ash (2–3 plates depending on size), white (1–2 plates), and golden yellow (5–7 plates). The pattern specifically references working with 2-ply Plötulopi for gauge calculations and includes guidance on handling this particular yarn type.
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires multiple needle sizes and types to accommodate different sections:
- 5.5 mm (US 9) circular needles in both 40 cm and 80 cm lengths for the main body and yoke construction
- 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in both 40 cm and 80 cm lengths for the neckband
- 4.5 mm and 5.5 mm double-pointed needles (3 pairs) for working small circumferences
- Three hook-and-eye closures for fastening the cardigan front
Sizing and Finished Measurements
The Lopi Gleði is offered in six sizes with the following chest measurements: XS (92 cm), S (98 cm), M (103 cm), L (109 cm), XL (115 cm), and XXL (120 cm). The lower edge width ranges from 103 cm to 132 cm depending on size. Length to underarm varies from 70 cm to 80 cm, while sleeve length to underarm ranges from 45 cm to 50 cm, providing proportional sizing across the range.
Gauge and Finishing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 14 stitches and 19 rows equaling 10 x 10 cm in stockinette stitch using 5.5 mm needles and 2-ply Plötulopi. Checking and adjusting gauge is essential before beginning, as needle size adjustments may be necessary to achieve proper fit. Finishing
