What is Being Made

The Lopi Krílaland is a charming knitted onesie or snowsuit for babies aged 9–18 months (with a larger size option for 18–24 months). Inspired by preschool children in Icelandic winter wear, this design features a playful aesthetic with coordinating colors and stranded colorwork details. The garment is a complete one-piece construction combining legs, body, sleeves, and yoke in a single seamless project, finished with a neckband and functional zipper closure.

Techniques Used

Bottom-up construction: The Lopi Krílaland is worked from the legs upward, beginning with the leg sections knitted individually in the round before being joined together.

Seamless, worked in the round: Both legs and sleeves are worked circularly using double-pointed needles, eliminating the need for seaming. Once the legs are complete, they are joined and the body and sleeves are incorporated into a single circular piece for the yoke, creating a fully seamless garment.

Stranded colorwork: The design incorporates stranded knitting techniques, with pattern details worked from charts. Chart 1 appears on the sleeves, while Chart 2 guides the yoke colorwork and decreases, allowing multiple colors to be carried across rounds for decorative effect.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches including:

  • Ribbing (k1, p1): Used for the leg cuffs to create stretch and a fitted finish. The ribbing is worked for 5 rounds in color A, then 2 rounds in color D before transitioning to stockinette stitch.
  • Stockinette stitch: The primary fabric throughout the body, sleeves, and yoke sections, providing a smooth, classic finish.
  • Stranded colorwork: Decorative patterning worked from charts, integrating colors A, B, C, and D into the fabric.

Shaping is achieved through strategic increases in the sleeves and decreases in the yoke, all worked seamlessly within the round to maintain the garment's integrity.

Materials and Tools

This pattern calls for Léttlopi yarn, an Icelandic wool blend available in 50-gram balls. The color palette includes:

  • Color A: 1702 Milkyway (5–6 balls, depending on size)
  • Color B: 9434 Crimson (1 ball)
  • Color C: 1403 Lapis Blue (1 ball)
  • Color D: 9420 Navy (1 ball)

Needles required are 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in both 40 cm and 60 cm lengths for the body and yoke work, and 3.5 mm (US 4) double-pointed needles for the leg cuffs and neckband. A closed-end zipper is also needed for the front closure.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 18 stitches and 24 rows over 10 cm in stockinette stitch using 4.5 mm needles. Two sizes are provided: 9–18 months with a chest measurement of 60 cm and total length of 62 cm from center back, and 18–24 months with a chest of 65 cm and length of 68 cm. Leg length to body is 24–26 cm, and sleeve length to underarm is 20–22 cm, accommodating the rapid growth of babies during this developmental stage.
