Craft and Techniques

This is a knitting project worked flat on straight needles. The shawl employs multiple knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture throughout the design. The construction begins and ends with garter stitch borders, which provide a neat, finished edge and help prevent curling. The central section features a charted stitch pattern that repeats across the width and is worked multiple times to achieve the desired length.

Key techniques used include cable stitches, which add dimension and a classic, luxurious appearance to the fabric. The pattern also incorporates yarn forward increases and decreases (K2tog and slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over), which are essential for shaping and creating the patterned texture. The cable work requires the use of a cable needle to temporarily hold stitches while crossing them over one another.

Stitches Used

Pattern Structure

The shawl is constructed in three distinct sections. The first section consists of 8 rows of garter stitch worked on 4mm needles, establishing the foundation. The main body is then worked on 5mm needles using a 32-stitch pattern repeat that is worked twice across each row, with a 44-row chart pattern repeated 11 times in full, followed by rows 1 through 22 of the chart worked once more. This structured repetition creates the shawl's length while maintaining consistent patterning. The final section mirrors the beginning with 7 rows of garter stitch on 4mm needles before casting off.

Materials

This project uses Rowan Kid Classic yarn, a luxurious fiber that contributes to the shawl's elegant drape and soft feel. The yarn is worked at a gauge of 20 stitches and 25 rows to 10 centimeters over the pattern using 5mm needles.
