Malabrigo Celebracion Cowl

What Is Being Made

Celebracion is an intermediate-level knitted cowl designed by Sabine Engel, featuring painterly variegated colorwork combined with architecturally inspired embossed cable details. This lightweight and soft accessory can be worn as a single relaxed loop around the shoulders or wrapped close to the neck for versatile styling options. The finished cowl measures 14 inches (35 cm) in height with a circumference of 52.75 inches (134 cm), making it an elegant layering piece suitable for various occasions.

Techniques and Construction Methods

The Celebracion cowl employs several intermediate knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive aesthetic. The pattern begins with a twisted ribbing foundation created using a long tail cast on with 370 stitches joined in the round. Knit through the back loop (ktbl) stitches feature prominently throughout the design, creating a twisted texture that enhances the overall visual interest of the piece.

Cable work forms the architectural centerpiece of this design. The pattern incorporates both left-leaning and right-leaning 2-stitch cables that alternate throughout the fabric, as well as larger 4-stitch cables that create more dramatic textural elements. These cables are worked using a cable needle to temporarily hold stitches, allowing the knitter to cross stitches over one another in both forward and reverse directions.

A critical technique note for this pattern involves alternating skeins of yarn every row to blend the variegated nature of the yarn and prevent color pooling—a visual phenomenon where similar colors cluster together undesirably. Additionally, the pattern requires repositioning the beginning-of-round marker twice during each 32-row pattern repeat, as the 2-stitch cables shift the stitch positions.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (K): Worked through the back loop in odd-numbered rows for a twisted effect, and worked as standard knit stitches in even-numbered rows
  • Purl stitch (P): Worked through the back loop in the ribbing section; worked as standard purls in the main pattern
  • Left-leaning 2-stitch cable: Slip 1 stitch to cable needle and hold in front, purl 1 stitch from left needle, then knit through the back loop 1 stitch from cable needle
  • Right-leaning 2-stitch cable: Slip 1 stitch to cable needle and hold in back, knit through the back loop 1 stitch from left needle, then purl 1 stitch from cable needle
  • Left-leaning 4-stitch cable: Slip 1 stitch to cable needle and hold in front, knit through the back loop 3 stitches from left needle, then knit through the back loop 1 stitch from cable needle
  • Right-leaning 4-stitch cable: Slip 3 stitches to cable needle and hold in back, knit through the back loop 1 stitch from left needle, then knit through the back loop 3 stitches from cable needle
  • Twisted ribbing: Alternating purl through the back loop and knit through the back loop to create a textured elastic edge

Materials and Specifications

The Celebracion cowl is crafted using Malabrigo Mechita, a luxurious yarn composed of 100% superwash merino wool. This fiber choice ensures the finished cowl is lightweight, soft, and easy to care for. The pattern requires 2 skeins of Malabrigo Mechita in the Aniversario #005 colorway, providing 420 yards (384 meters) per 100-gram skein, for a total of 840 yards of yarn.

Knitting tools required include US 3 (3 mm) circular needles in either a 32-inch (80 cm) or 48-inch (120 cm) length, depending on preferred working method. Additional notions include one cable needle for managing cable stitches, one tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and one stitch marker to denote the beginning of the round.

Gauge and Finishing

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 27 stitches and 38 rows measured over the cable pattern repeat, equaling 4 inches (10 cm) on US 3 needles after blocking. Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions and ensuring the cables display their intended architectural definition. The main pattern chart consists of a 32-row repeat that is worked
