Malabrigo Emery Top Down Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Emery is a top-down seamless pullover sweater designed by Knox Mountain Knit Co and available in five sizes ranging from Small to XX-Large. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a classic crew-neck pullover worked in the round from the yoke down, offering a modern construction method that eliminates the need for seaming and allows for easy customization of length during the knitting process.

Techniques Used

This sweater employs several key knitting techniques that define its construction:

  • Top-down construction: The sweater begins at the neckline with a small cast-on and increases are strategically placed to shape the yoke, shoulders, and upper body before transitioning to the main body and sleeves.
  • Worked in the round: Using circular needles, the entire garment is knitted continuously in circular rows, creating a seamless fabric that requires no seaming.
  • Seamless construction: The top-down, in-the-round method produces a finished garment with no seams to sew together, resulting in a smooth, professional appearance.
  • Increase shaping: The pattern uses kfb (knit into front and back) increases to gradually expand the yoke and create proper fit across the shoulders and bust.

Stitches Used

The Emery pattern incorporates fundamental knitting stitches suitable for intermediate crafters:

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch throughout the body and sleeves, created by knitting every round to produce the classic smooth, V-textured fabric.
  • K1, P1 Rib: Used for the ribbed cuff at the neckline, this alternating knit and purl stitch creates an elastic, fitted edge that helps the neckline sit properly and prevents rolling.
  • Knit and Purl combinations: The yoke shaping incorporates mixed knit and purl stitches to create textural interest and structure during the increase rounds.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Yarn: The Emery is designed to be worked in Rasta by Malabrigo, a merino wool yarn. Rasta comes in 5.29-ounce (150-gram) hanks, with each hank providing approximately 90 yards (82 meters). The pattern shown uses color #182 Tundra and requires 5 to 6 hanks depending on size, with larger sizes (Large through XX-Large) requiring 6 hanks.

Needles: The pattern calls for both US 15 (10mm) and US 17 (12mm) circular needles. Knitters will need one pair each of shorter circular needles (16 inches/40 centimeters) and longer circular needles (32 to 40 inches/80 to 100 centimeters). Additionally, one set of five double-pointed needles in each size is required for working the sleeves when stitches become too few for circular needles. Needle selection should be adjusted to obtain the specified gauge.

Gauge and Fit

The pattern specifies a gauge of 7 stitches and 14 rounds over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch using US 17 (12mm) needles. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure the finished sweater matches the intended measurements. Finished bust measurements range from 36½ inches (92.5 centimeters) in Small to 55 inches (139.5 centimeters) in XX-Large, with body lengths from 24 to 26 inches (61 to 66 centimeters) and upper arm circumferences from 12½ to 17 inches (32 to 43 centimeters).

Construction Notes

The Emery is worked as a single piece beginning with the yoke. The pattern begins with a small cast-on at the neckline using the smaller needles and K1, P1 ribbing for structure. After the ribbed cuff, knitters transition to the larger needles and stockinette stitch, working strategic increases to shape the yoke. As stitches accumulate, the pattern progresses from shorter to longer circular needles to accommodate the growing fabric. The design is worked from the wrong side initially, then turned right-side out upon completion, creating a polished finished garment.
