MillaMia Ali Jumper: Stranded Knit Sweater Pattern

What is Being Made

The MillaMia Ali Jumper is an intermediate-level knitted sweater featuring a striking Fair Isle yoke design. This garment is constructed as a classic pullover with set-in sleeves and a crew neckline. Available in three sizes to fit bust measurements of 89cm, 97cm, and 106cm (35, 38, and 41½ inches), the jumper offers a finished length to the back of neck of 56cm, 59cm, or 62cm (22, 23¼, or 24½ inches) with consistent 44cm (17¼ inch) sleeve length across all sizes.

Techniques and Construction Methods

Construction Approach: The Ali Jumper is worked flat using straight needles for the body and sleeves, then seamed together. The yoke section transitions to working in the round using circular needles to accommodate the Fair Isle colorwork pattern.

Stranded Colorwork: The defining feature of this jumper is its Fair Isle yoke, which employs the stranded technique. When working the patterned yoke, yarn not in use is stranded loosely across the wrong side of the work. The Fair Isle chart is read from right to left on every round. The pattern notes suggest selecting a contrasting color to make the yoke the main visual feature of the garment.

Seaming Method: All pieces are sewn together after completion, creating a traditional seamed construction that provides structure and durability.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking Stitch (Stockinette Stitch): The primary stitch throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic fabric surface
  • Ribbing: Used for the neckline, cuffs, and hem to provide elasticity and a finished appearance
  • Fair Isle Patterning: Colorwork stitches worked in the round across the yoke section using the stranded technique with multiple colors

Materials and Specifications

Yarn: MillaMia Naturally Soft Cotton Aran weight yarn (exclusively available at Love Knitting):

  • 9, 10, or 11 balls of MillaMia Naturally Soft Cotton Aran in Stone (202) as the main color (A)
  • 4, 5, or 5 balls of Marine Blue (210) for the yoke contrast (B)
  • 1 ball of Magenta (232) for additional yoke detailing (C)

Needles: The pattern requires both straight and circular needles in two sizes:

  • Pair of 4.5mm (US 7) needles for ribbed sections
  • Pair of 5mm (US 8) needles for main fabric
  • Circular 4.5mm (US 7) needle for ribbed neckline
  • Circular 5mm (US 8) needle for Fair Isle yoke rounds

Gauge: 18 stitches and 24 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch using 5mm (US 8) needles. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit.

Additional Pattern Notes

The pattern recommends casting off the neckline loosely to allow ease for the ribbing, with a helpful tip to use one needle size larger when binding off. Alternative colorway options are provided, including Blush, Bark, Ivory, Ultramarine Mist, Paradise, and Orange, allowing crafters to customize the Fair Isle yoke appearance while maintaining the same construction method and structure.
