Product Description
The MillaMia Alice Frill Jumper is a showstopping pullover that's perfect for kids with a flair for the fanciful. This Alice in Wonderland inspired sweater features stranded colorwork motifs of the suits of cards on the body and a whimsical waving ruffle circling the yoke. This sweater is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up with sleeves, front, and back joining to work the raglan yoke in one piece. The frill is knit flat separately and seamlessly joined into the yoke. A button placket along one raglan line makes for easy on and off and adds another splash of color. Colorwork patterns are charted only.

MillaMia Alice Frill Jumper: Advanced Knitted Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
The MillaMia Alice Frill Jumper is an advanced-level knitted sweater designed for children aged 2-9 years. This garment features a charming Fair Isle design inspired by classic playing card motifs from Alice in Wonderland, making it a thematic and visually striking piece. The jumper is available in four size options to fit ages 2-3, 4-5, 6-7, and 8-9 years, with chest measurements ranging from 61cm to 76cm and corresponding length adjustments. The design incorporates decorative buttonholes and buttons as functional and aesthetic elements.
Techniques Used
This project employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques that combine to create a sophisticated finished garment:
- Bottom-Up Construction: The sweater is worked from the bottom edge upward, allowing for straightforward sizing adjustments and a logical progression through the pattern.
- Stranded Colorwork (Fair Isle): The signature technique features two colors worked simultaneously in each row, creating the intricate playing card-inspired pattern. The pattern notes reassure knitters that despite the impressive appearance, only two colors are ever active at once, making the colorwork accessible even at the advanced level.
- Worked Flat: Pieces are constructed on straight needles in flat rows rather than in the round, then seamed together for assembly.
- Seaming: Individual pieces—front, back, and sleeves—are joined using seaming techniques to create the finished garment.
- Buttonholes and Buttons: Functional buttonholes are incorporated into the design, finished with two buttons for closure and decorative detail.
Stitches Used
The Alice Frill Jumper utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with colorwork techniques:
- Stockinette Stitch (Stocking Stitch): The primary stitch throughout the garment, creating a smooth, classic fabric surface ideal for showcasing the Fair Isle pattern.
- Garter Stitch: Likely used for ribbed edges, cuffs, and finishing details to provide elasticity and a polished appearance.
- Moss Stitch (Seed Stitch): May be incorporated in border or textural elements for added visual interest.
- Increases and Decreases: Shaping techniques including make-one stitches (m1) and knit-two-together decreases (k2tog) are used to shape the garment pieces and create proper fit.
Materials and Specifications
The pattern calls for MillaMia Naturally Soft Merino yarn, a premium fiber choice that provides softness and durability suitable for children's wear. Yarn quantities vary by size, ranging from 2 to 4 balls of the main color (Ice in shade 125) and smaller quantities of accent colors including Lipstick Red, Pitch Black, Mist, Butterscotch, and Plum.
Needles Required: The project uses both straight and circular needles in two sizes—3mm (US 2) and 3.25mm (US 3)—allowing for proper gauge control and flexible construction methods. The smaller needles are typically used for ribbed edges and cuffs, while the larger needles accommodate the main stockinette fabric.
Gauge: The pattern specifies a tension of 25 stitches and 34 rows over a 10cm square in stockinette stitch using 3.25mm needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for accurate sizing in children's garments.
Additional Notions: Two buttons are required to complete the design, serving both functional and decorative purposes.
Design Features and Color Options
The Alice Frill Jumper showcases impressive Fair Isle colorwork with a playing card theme that captures the whimsy of Alice in Wonderland. The primary colorway features Ice as the base with Lipstick Red, Pitch Black, Mist, Butterscotch, and Plum creating the intricate pattern. The pattern encourages creative customization, offering alternative colorway suggestions including Snow, Midnight, Scarlet, Forget-me-not, Daisy, and Yellow. This flexibility allows knitters to personalize the garment while maintaining the classic Fair Isle aesthetic.
